Basic Cell Phones
This quote is from the NPR broadcast:
"Among the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, there is concern that cell phones with certain features could lead to immodesty among its community members. In an effort to combat that, but make cell phones available still, the community's rabbis have decided to review and kosher certify certain phones with limited features."

According to Reuters, in Israel "Hundreds of thousands of mobile phones, popularly dubbed kosher because they block access to services frowned upon by ultra-Orthodox rabbis, have been operating in the Jewish state for years."

"So the rabbinate decided to grant certain cell phones official approval, calling them kosher - a system that has been most well-known for its use in food. The kosher phones are stripped down devices that can only receive and make calls. It helps the community feel more comfortable about choosing a phone, he said, much like shopping for kosher food."

- Kosher or not, this is the kind of basic phone that my mom would prefer to use or my brother who's not interested in taking photos or going on the internet.
Even my smartphone is getting too smart for me. I have to keep consulting the manual.

- Living in Israel, I am well aware of this product. Sometimes I think that as a society we have all become a bit ADHD, with all the stimuli available all the time. Might be nice to just have a simple phone that you just used to talk with (oh, and texting, I wouldn't want to be without texting).
