A Unique Gift Idea for Valentine's Day
When I was asked for a unique Valentine's Day gift by one of my male friends, I looked around in my house to get inspiration.
Being from Scandinavia I have a great deal of tableware from locals artisans and my eyes stopped with flutes decorated with hears designed by Swedish artist Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. This collection makes a wonderful and beautiful gift idea for Valentine's Day.
She designed a bright red hearts on this glassware collection to be vivacious and playful without being sappy.
Each translucent plate, bowl, or stemmed glass is directly hand-painted with the big hearts, outlined boldly in black, along with blue and green strokes that lend a cartoon-like animation.
The deep bowls are especially noted for their textured, luminous exteriors. Crafted by master glassmakers in Sweden, the Hearts collection comprises not only lead-free, perfectly safe dinnerware, but a paperweight, candlestick, and other gift items as well.
To best preserve the colorful brushstrokes, hand-washing is recommended.
Born in 1939, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien has been on retainer at Kosta Boda since 1972. One of Sweden's best known and most popular artists, she creates unmistakable figures that can be seen on Ericsson mobile phones and the tails of British Airways airplanes, among other places. Hydman-Vallien's most important form of expression, however, is through her glass designs, which also played a large part in Kosta Boda's success in the 1980s and 1990s. "For me," she explains, "glass must always be close to your hand, to your innermost feelings, to your heart." Working with free and unrestrained energy, Hydman-Vallien paints her striking and humorous designs straight onto the glass. Her distinctive female faces, tulips, and snakes have decorated big-selling classics such as Open Minds, Tulipa, and Caramba. Her work is also exhibited in museums and collections all over the world.

The brightly animated colors and imagery of the Kosta Boda Hearts plate creates an upbeat mood with a romantic message. Fashioned from brilliant lead-free glass, it features a colorful red heart at its center, surrounded by playful green and blue accents and a bright red rim.

Funky Glass Bowl w/ Hearts
This Kosta Boda Hearts bowl is perfect if you're looking for something that's funky and more casual than other crystal serving pieces. The bowl's walls are thick and the piece itself is rather heavy.
It won't break easily, which makes it good for serving. It won't fit a large salad, but I've used it to serve fruit/berries.
The best use is as a centerpiece bowl because is does stand out.
Warning: Because it's handpainted on the outside, it should not go in the dishwasher.
