KRANKY Bio

More than you really want to know about KRANKY

In their words:

Laurence Shanet, a.k.a. KRANKY, was recently honored with the CFP-E Young Director award at Cannes, and was listed among 'boards magazine's top 10 directors to watch. In addition, his work has been placed in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent audio-visual collection. Recent directing credits for his worldwide client list include commercial projects for Starburst, Z95 radio, Powerball, Master Cabbie and Pepsi/Mirinda. Recently, he has also been involved in creating sponsored short film content for advertisers, including Pepsi, Johnsonville, Volkswagen, Red Stripe Beer and Mug root beer.

In addition to his advertising work, KRANKY is also involved in various projects in the entertainment world. He is the Head Writer and co-creator (with Vernon Church and Fred Stesney) of the animated series Badtime Stories (a.k.a. 8:37), currently in development. In 2002, he helmed the popular Off-Broadway play Connections, which received "Best Of Citysearch" honors.

Before embarking on his directorial career, Shanet was an award-winning creative director, writer, and producer for some of the top advertising agencies in the world, including McCann Erickson, Amster Yard, Kirshenbaum & Bond, Berlin Cameron, Leo Burnett, Dweck! and Campbell, BBDO and others. His clients have included Bacardi, Reebok, Coca-Cola, Sony, Dial-a-Mattress, McDonald's, Mustang, GMC Trucks, Twinlab, UPN, Fresh Samantha, Motorola, Martini & Rossi and Sol beer, among others.

In addition to the Cannes Young Director Award and the 'boards distinction, Shanet's other recent directorial distinctions include AICP/MOMA, Clio, One Show, London International Advertising Awards, First Boards Corby Award, ADDY and TELLY awards. His past advertising awards include a Cannes Gold Lion and multiple Clios, One Show awards, LIAA, ADDYs, ANDYs Art Director's Club, CA, D & AD, AICP/MOMA, Adweek Creativity Best Spots, SHOOT Magazine Top Spot, and Boards Magazine Top Ten. Shanet holds a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing/Film and Psychology, and an Advanced Studies certificate in marketing communications from the Johns Hopkins University, and was part of New York University's commercial directing graduate program.

He is a former competitive-level tennis player, can't play billiards to save his life and never shoots less than 120 on the golf course, although you'll have a hard time getting him out there, even on a nice day, unless he gets to drive the cart. Despite the moniker, he is generally pleasant.

The authorized version:

Laurence Shanet is KRANKY. Raised by wolves from an early age after a fluke curling accident, KRANKY was destined to become a commercial director. Or a life coach. Whichever one gets more chicks, really.

After studying film at Johns Hopkins and NYU, KRANKY's advertising career started out on the agency side, where he spent more than 10 years writing, producing and supervising award-winning commercial work for some of the world's top agencies, until they caught him at it.

As a director, KRANKY made an early mark by creating and directing the world's first high-profile commercial web film series for Pepsi, although the terms "viral", "webisode" and "bukkake" had yet to be invented. (His self-centered suggestion to call it "KONTENT" fortunately never caught on.)

He soon made a splash on the awards scene with commercial projects for Master Cabbie, Carvel Ice Cream and the Minnesota State Lottery, often incorporating bears, death and obscene gestures as recurring themes. As his client list has become larger and more prominent, he has maintained his clarity of vision by switching to a specially designed diet that consists solely of root vegetables, amphetamines and the remains of a disturbingly large carp that he caught accidentally while learning to wakeboard.

In addition to his work in advertising, KRANKY has been very active in the world of entertainment (and no, we aren't referring to his work as a "dancer"). Among other projects, he directed the Off-Broadway production of Vernon Church's "Connections", which won Best of CitySearch honors, and is co-creator of the animated series "Badtime Stories", currently in development. KRANKY is now available for commercial projects again due to a recent decrease in his medication, but we don't talk about that.

Despite the moniker, he is generally pleasant.
