A resource for exploring the wonderful kribensis cichlid.
Kribensis Cichlids
Kribensis are not a lake cichlid like so many fish from the African continent. In the wild they are found in African rivers and streams.
Kribs have very distinct body colouration that is unlike any other fish. The main body and fin colours are gold, grey and magenta. Both sexes have a dark bar that runs horizontally from the eye to the tail. Kribs have egg spots hich are usually present on the top half of the tail.
When the female is at her most fertile her belly becomes a brighter magenta. This fades slighltly when not ready to lay but remains rather bright.
The male grows larger and never seems quite as brightly coloured as the female. He will also display longer fins that end in a fine point.
Breeding is not difficult but often comes as a surprise due the the kribensis' secretive behaviour. The krib is a mouth brooder resulting in small fry clutches that are capable of fitting in the mother's mouth.
