Kris Kristofferson's History At A Glance

A Brief Biography of Kris Kristofferson From Wikipedia

Kris Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1936. Like most military brats he moved around much as a youth; he finally settled down in San Mateo, California, where he graduated from San Mateo High School. Kristofferson's father was an AirForce general who pushed his son toward a military career. Kristofferson got his first dose of fame when he appeared in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" for his achievements in rugby union, football, and track and field. An aspiring writer, Kristofferson earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University (Merton College, Oxford) after previously attending Pomona College. While in England, Kristofferson began writing songs and working with his manager Larry Parnes; he recorded for Top Rank Records under the name Kris Carson, but was unsuccessful.

In 1960, he graduated with a master's degree in English literature and married an old girlfriend, Fran Beer. Kristofferson ultimately joined the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot after receiving flight training at Fort Rucker in southeastern Alabama. During the early 1960s, he was stationed in West Germany and returned to music and formed a band. In 1965, he resigned his commission to pursue songwriting. He had just been assigned to become an English Literature professor at West Point. Kristofferson sent some of his compositions to a friend's relative, Marijohn Wilkin, a successful Nashville, Tennessee, songwriter.

Kris Kristofferson's Story - From The Country Music Hall Of Fame

Kris Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2004. His bio, from their site, reads in part:
"In some ways, Kris Kristofferson was an unlikely candidate for a career as a country songwriter and recording artist. Considering his family background and his education, he seemed destined to become a military officer or a college professor. Born in 1936 in Brownsville, Texas, he was the son of an air force major general, and served as an army captain during his own stint in the service. As a Rhodes Scholar, he studied literature at Oxford University after finishing his undergraduate degree at Pomona College in California."

A Little Bit About This Old Road

Kris Kristofferson's Newest Album - In His Words

Kris Kristofferson has always identified himself first and foremost as a writer, and true writers know that what works best is giving a piece of themselves to the listener. With his latest album, This Old Road, Kristofferson lays a chunk of his own soul on every track. This beautifully sparse recording, puts an emphasis on his fine lyrics and distinctive voice by featuring Kristofferson, his guitar, and harmonica. Subtle accompaniment is added by Was (bass, piano, backing vocals), longtime sidekick Stephen Bruton (guitar, mandolin, backing vocals) and Jim Keltner (drums). The album is so intimate it makes the listener feel as if they are sitting in Kristofferson's living room while he picks and sings just for them.

Kristofferson's story is fairly well known: he had a dream-along with the necessary talent and ambition-to become a songwriter. After turning down a teaching position at West Point, the Rhodes Scholar hoped to get his foot in the door of the music business by taking a job as a janitor at Columbia Records. It wasn't long after arriving in Nashville that he was receiving armloads of acclaim and being hailed as one of America's clearest and most important voices, having penned such classics as "Me and Bobby McGee", "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "For the Good Times", and many others.

Now Kristofferson has reached living legend status, but that hasn't changed or hindered his skills. This Old Road contains eleven gems that explore love, gratitude, aging, war, and his ever-present theme of freedom. "If you took freedom out of the songs, you'd have very few Kristofferson songs," he laughs. "If I had to describe it in one word, I'd say it's honest," he says of This Old Road. "It's all pretty close to the bone, about my own personal journey. It's about what sense I've made of my life up to now."

Me & Bobby McGee Lyrics

The lyrics as Kris Kristofferson wrote and sang them.

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the trains,
feelin' nearly faded as my jeans.
Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained,
took us all the way to New Orleans.
Took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana,
and was blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues.
With them windshield wipers slappin' time and Bobby clappin' hands,
we finally sang up every song that driver knew.
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose,
and nothin' ain't worth nothin' but its free.
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues,
and buddy, that was good enough for me.
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.
From the coal mines of Kentucky to the California sun,
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul.
Standin' right beside me through everythin' I done,
and every night she kept me from the cold.
Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away,
she was lookin' for the love I hope she'll find.
Well I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday,
holdin Bobby's body close to mine.
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose,
and nothin' left was all she left to me.
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues,
and buddy, that was good enough for me.
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee.

Truly the way a bio lens should be done. Happy birthday to Kris Kristofferson! I remember seeing him in an interview where he talked about his family's reaction to his chosen career. It left me feeling rather cold thinking that his family would want to stifle this man's dreams. Goes to show, though, that a passion that great cannot be extinguished.

Kris is a great songwriter/ singer, has a very engaging personality, and has truly lived life to the fullest! Why Me Lord? is one of his greatest gifts to society. He is so personable, one feels as if he is an old friend. Having been a devoted fan of his for almost 40 years, I feel that I have seen his life play out through his songwriting. There is hardly ever a day that I don't listen to his music. He is a good actor also, but songwriting/singing are his greatest talents!

    I loved Lone Star
A talented man whom I will never forget.
You can bring my heart to a torn and shattered mess with the songs you write. I know of nobody else that works that magic on me about my relationships with the beautiful women in my life.
