South African Krugerrand Gold
The South African Krugerrand gold coin is one of the most popular gold bullion coins ever minted. The success and demand for Krugerrand coins instituted the minting of other popular gold bullion coins by other countries including the Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins and the American Eagle gold coin series along with a number of others.
The United States Gold Reserve Act of January 30, 1934 prohibited United States citizens from owning and trading gold bullion and gold coins that were not considered to be collectors coins. American citizens regained the right to buy and own gold on December 31, 1974. The South African Krugerrand became an instant hit with a large number of Americans desiring to own gold and a modern day gold rush was launched.
