Kumbhalgarh is in the Rajasmand district of Rajasthan, India. It is famous for its fort, which has a 36 Km long wall, said to be the second-largest after the Great Wall of China. A recent vist to this legendary fort, and my desire to share my experience and information with others has inspired me to make this lens.

Places to Stay

Hotels and Resorts

There are only a few resorts near the fort. It is possible to stay at Udaipur/ Nathdwar (Shrinathji), or Falna and make a day trip to the fort.
  • Club Mahindra, Fort Kumbhalgarh

This is where we stayed. It is a new resort,5 Kms from the fort, which opened just 3 months back. They are still in the process of adding facilities. In a few months time, they will be all set to cater to the crowd sure to arrive there. It is a very comfortable resort, and will surely live up to the name of Club Mahindra chain of resorts. You can viist their website for more details www.clubmahindra.com
  • The Aodhi, Kumbhalgarh

1 Km away from the fort, this is the most favoured resort of the foreigners who visit kumbhalgarh. Looks extremely attractive from the outside.
  • The Dera Tented Resort

If variety is what you are looking for, this is the place for you.. They have accomodation in the form of luxurious tnets with all amenities. An exciting thought, isn't it ?
  • Kumbhal Castle Resort

Lookd like just another resort from the outside.. I have no idea whatsover about the inside......
  • Tiger Valley Resort

A neighbour of Club Mahindra, it looks good, but I have no details....

Things to Do at Kumbhalgarh

  • Relax... spend time with your family.
  • Enjoy being unreachable from the rest of the world!! Most cellphones don's have a good network here,so you will really be unreachable...So, go on, make the most of it!!!
  • Trekking- just go walking on these mountains.... The club Mabhindra people are looking up good trekking routes, and believe me, if you are the adventurous kind, you will find many!!!
  • Take your family to see the fields... If your children have never been to a village before, they will enjoy the sights, especially the water wheels, which my son particularly enjoyed...
  • Go for the jungle safari... dont expect lions or tigers, or any animals for that matter... just enjoy the sights and sounds of the jungle....
  • Go horse riding and camel riding near the fort.....
  • Talk to the locals... They will have interesting stories for you....
  • Have sugarcane juice made from fresh sugarcane from the fields......

Places to Visit

around Kumbhalgarh

Here are some of the places around the fort which are worth a visit.
  • Parshuram Mahadeo Temple
This is a cave temple, about 25 Kms from the fort, and about 40 Kms from Falna. The road from Falna goes up to the foothills, from where one has to climb about 2 Kms on foot, up the hill. The road from Kumbhalgarh reaches the peak, from where one has to descend about 1 1/4 Kms on foot.... Either way, this is a good place to visit......To read more about this temple on my blog, click here
  • Amaj Mata Temple
This is a small temple dedicated to the godess atop a small hill, about 10 Kms from the fort.
  • Charbhuja Temple
A temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, this temple has the rare distinction of having an idol of Krishna with 4 arms, and weapons in each arm. This is a very popular temple, so expect crowds!
  • Muchhal Mahavir
A small Jain Temple of Lord Mahavir, it has exquisite carvings, and an intersting legend too....To read more about the temple, click here, and to read about the legend, click here
  • Ranakpur Jain Temples
Too much has been written about these temples, so I will not add to it, but these are temples, really worth a visit..one is absolutely awed by the craftsmanship of the people of those days...
  • Udaipur
The city of Lakes hardly needs any further talk. it is just 90 Kms from Kumbhalgarh....
  • Nathdwara
The impressive temple of Shrinathji at Nathdwar is about 50 Kms from Kumbhalgarh

When to Visit

This is one place you can visit at any time of the year. Yes! Believe me......
The best time to visit, like most places in India, is November-December. The rains would be over by then, and the mountains would be covered with greenery.

The Rainy season here is from August to November, but it doesnt rain too heavily, and we have been told that the place looks heavenly!!!

And, finally, in summer, you just can't feel the heat there.... it is high enough to be cool at all times. Of course, in the summer, it will be difficult to visit the surrounding places because of the heat, but one can spot more animals in the jungle.....

So go ahead, and make a trip to Kumbhalgarh !!!

The Most Important Thing

When you visit any of these places, remember the wonder and beauty that is India. It is only here that the past and the present co-exists in such harmony , and sustains hope for the future which is to come. Let us not do anything to spoil this harmony, this peace, and try only to take it to the next, higher level, where even the future joins in to make things perfect, while still retaining the values and culture of the days that are past, making the present the best time to live in !!!!
