Holy Madness: The Shock Tactics and Radical Teachings of Crazy-Wise Adepts, Holy Fools and Rascal Gurus
George Feuerstein
Russian spiritual teacher Georgei Gurdjieff force-fed vegetarians hefty meat dishes. Japanese Zen master Lin-chi thrashed his pupils. Indian guru Meher Baba remained silent for 43 years. All employed what Feuerstein, author of books on yoga and religion, calls "holy madness" or "crazy wisdom," using eccentric behavior or shock tactics to communicate an alternative vision. A former devotee of Da Free John (aka Da Love-Ananda, ne Franklin Jones), Feuerstein presents critical cameos of holy fools (Aleister Crowley, BhagwanRajneesh, etc.) as well as guidelines for choosing a wise, enlightened guru and avoiding the exploitative. Yet his gallery of spiritual eccentrics is so diverse--ranging from Christian mystics to Hindu holy men who live on garbage heaps--that it's hard to credit the author's generalizations about the value of holy folly as an authentic path to transcendence.

Farther Shores: Exploring How Near-Death, Kundalini and Mystical Experiences Can Transform Ordinary Lives
Yvonne Kason
This book is easy to miss as a kundalini guide because its title does not indicate this aspect of its content. The author, an MD, has assisted large numbers of people in kundalini processes and has a wealth of information to offer that is very valuable to anyone wanting/needing to learn about a kundalini experience. She is a medial doctor with a vast knowledge of spiritual phenomena. In my experience, people with spontaneous arisings are helped a great deal by this perspective which integrates Eastern and Western understandings.

The Kundalini Experience: Psychosis or Transcendence
Lee Sanella
Many people have heard of the extraordinary phenomenon of kundalini awakening in which a persons body is swept by muscle spasms, indescribable sensations & sharp pains running throughout the body. He feels his body tearing within. Then suddenly he laughs & is overcome with bliss. When allowed to progress to completion, this process may culminate in deep psychological balance, inner strength, and emotional maturity.
Psychiatrist Lee Sanneli, cofounder of the Kundalini Clinic in San Francisco, differentiates this from a psychotic episode. Instead, it is a psychophysiological transformation, or 'rebirth' process as natural as physical birth.
Kundalini Awakening: A Gentle Guide to Chakra Activation and Spiritual Growth
John Selby and Zachary Selig
Books on the subject of Kundalini yoga--practiced only by the most advanced yogis and spiritualists--have generally focused on theory and history. But now comes the first book to offer readers techniques for bringing Kundalini energy into everyday life. Includes breathing exercises, chants, and visual symbols and paintings.
Kundalini, Evolution, and Enlightenment
John Warren White
I put this book right next to Healing the Split by John Nelson as two of the best books on Kundalini. One reason is that they both holistically look at theories, personal accounts and scientific research. They also explore individual/social relationships. Both are very well rounded and grounded books that should always available on the market!

- I like the video series on youtube -bipolarorwakingup" whe he explores his own kundalini awakening and stay in a mental ward. He also has a social network entitled "wake the planet". My favorite authors on the subject are Ram Dass and Groff. Thank you for this informative lens on this esoteric subject.

- I've been through different levels of Kundalini awakening. The last big blast I hung onto my sanity by a very thin thread. But I'm in agreement with the ideas of the people you've presented here. I think that as a culture we're misdiagnosing mental illness when it's really spiritual transformation wanting to happen without the proper guidance to get through it. It's also interesting that the ages in which women are most likely to have both a "spiritual emergency" and a schizophrenic episode are the same: 29 and 40.

- There's a lot of misconceptions about "kundalini" out there... Mostly that it is somehow a harmful experience... This couldn't be farther from the truth! Kundalini is about consciousness, awareness, spirituality and getting closer to self-knowledge and the absolute truth that we are all connected being living as one with God (or Infinity). When your energy increases and you treat yourself well, and you practice meditation moderately with ample rest, you generate a continuous rising of kundalini that simply makes you feel happy, healthy, and holy! Don't believe the hype. Kundalini is bliss!

- I don't think that's what the general story is at all. What people experience is a process that's both bliss and dangerous. If your energy has had only positive effects from this, you're the exception. For most people it's a difficult road, though one with a positive outcome at the end.
To think that anything powerful might NOT have risks involved is naive, I think.

- James, you are spot on, exactly so. Nothing to fear from it. I wonder why anyone comments to the contrary. What people do is confuse what is to them a foreign word with what is just a physical phenomenon that has no equivalent [so far] in western physiology. What I want to do is find a group similar to this to share on a more intimate & regular basis so it can be developed for everyone BLISS: p_yogena@yahoo.com.

- Healing and clairvoyance: research after the work of Geoffrey Hodson
- Geoffrey Hodson's faculty was what is sometimes called "conscious" or "trained" clairvoyance, it was neither "mediumistic" nor induced by shamanistic practices. It could also be described as "Kundalini activated clairvoyance" where the threefold Kundalini force (the serpent power of Indian Yoga) has been thoroughly and systematically aroused within a properly strengthened and purified body and psyche.
