Welcome to the Animal Kung Fu Page

Kung fu is famous for its many animal styles, from frog to tiger and from crane to snake, each with its own unique characterisics. They can be truly beautiful and fascinating to watch, and great fun to practice, as well as helping to develop particular skills and physical strengths and to give the practitoner techniques that are often unpredictable to defend against.

This page is dedicated to all things related to any animal style of kung fu, featuring videos, links, products and more.

Learn Five Animal Style Kung Fu

Shaolin Frog

Some kung fu animal style are highly effective and are obviously based on wanting to emulate characteristics that would be useful to a fighter, such as strength, flexibility, speed, ferocity and so on. Other styles were created primarily for display purposes, for putting on professional shows or to attract new students to a school by offering a unique style. the Frog, or Toad, is one of the wackier 'display styles', and it certainly fulfills its brief because it is very entertaining to watch.

Tiger kung fu is a very powerful and attacking style. Once the tiger attacks, it does not back away until the fight is over. The tiger claw hand form is used in this style to grab and strike as well as to rake and claw, particulalry to the face

Scorpion Kung Fu

Another rare and unusual animal style, only practiced by a group of monks at the Shaolin Temple as far as I am aware. It's quite showy but does have some good practical techniques in it too. This video demonstration gives you a good glimpse of what it is like.

Snake Kung Fu

You must have very good flexibility to effectively use the snake style. Very low stances are common, strikes are very fast. The hands are kept open, and it is common to strike with the fingers or with the knife hand form to the neck and other soft areas.
