Kurbani Means "The Ultimate Sacrifice" and The Core Ritual of Eid ul Adha to Muslims
This lens will focus on a simple guide through what kurbani eid/ eid ul adha means. This lens will be helpful to everyone who has little to no knowledge on this ritual.
Hundreds of years ago Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim in Arabic) was in the ultimate test to sacrifice his only son "Ismael" -it was a tough decision to make, as Abraham had only one son. Abraham was 86 when Ismael was born (yeah because that time human lived hundreds of years and were much taller than human in today's world)
Satan tried to trick Abraham in slaughter smael's life "...if he (God) likes you, he will save Ismael's life." Abraham went to sacrifice Ismael; Ismael accepted his fathers decision. When Abraham put the knife on Ismael's throat and cut him, Ismael was replace with a Lama/goat like animal, and the Lama was slaughtered instead of Ismael.
Thus the "Ultimate Sacrifice" has been made and after that for thousands of years, until now Muslims are slathering animal annually on the Eid ul adha.
Eid ul adha is the ritual to memorate the example of Abraham.

In Present Culture
Kurbani (eid ul adha) is celebrated annually just the way eid ul fitr, but this time there is the ritual of sacrificing. Muslims all over the world take part in eid ul adha, only a few people don't go with the slaughter thing (for belief or for unable to spend)
One family/individual can slaughter as many animals as they can afford. It can also be shared with a number of families with up to 7 shares. In my zone, bulls are common and also the goats. People like to cut and process the meat by hand or a butcher is called -on the street/neighborhood.
The meat should be divided into 3 parts, one for the poor, one for the relatives and the rest is to keep for you. The skin of the animal is usually donated to the poor or non profit organizations (such as mosques).
The sacrifice can be made one day before/ same day/ or the next day of eid ul adha. Kurbani eid is more than a ritual, now it's been the center of culture of different countries. In India eid ul adha is called "Bakra Eid" -Goat eid (because a goat has been slaughtered) which is in terms doesn't go with the actual definition of eid ul adha.
Today's culture (just mentioning about my zone) eid ul adha and sacrificing is a "Social Status" like thing. People purchase large cows that has a bigger price tag and the highest is is the better. So they can brag about them to their friends, colleagues and neighbors. A high range cow costs BDT 100,000-500,000 (USD 1500-7,000) while the low and mid range costs BDT 10,000-50,000 (USD 150-700)
People always forget in the sake of competition that this is all about the sacrifice and to get the mercy of God. In kurbani, God gives away as much blessings as the number of hair of the animal. And it's given even before the blood(slaughtered animal's) hits the floor.
In middle east and arab countries "Camels" are slaughtered.
