Cut off points for JC

It is a fact many of you recognised, that your L1R5 score may bring joy or anguish. Always has been.

The total L1R5, for first language and 5 relevant subjects, is the basis for junior college admission. Scoring 15 or fewer points will admit you to either a Science or Arts Course in a junior college, though Raffles Institution, HwaChong Institution and other junior colleges of academic excellence would expect single digit L1R5 to admit you. Then again, if your L1R5 score ranges between 16 and 20, you will be admitted if your grades are A1 & A2 for all R5 subjects.

Subjects are graded with a number and an accompanying letter: A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8, and F9.

L1R5 Subjects

L1R5 subjects must comprise the following:

(1) First Language (English or Higher Mother Tongue)
(2) Relevant five subjects

  • one humanities, higher-art, or higher-music subject
  • one maths &science subject
  • one humanities, higher-art, higher-music, or maths &science subject
  • any two other GCE 'O' Level subjects excluding CCA and religious knowledge

L1R5 Calculation

Calculate your L1R5 by adding up the grades of the L1R5 subjects.

Bonus points can improve your score. You gain two bonus points for scoring an A in CCA, one point for a B in CCA, two points for A1 to C6 in English and Higher Mother Tongue, two points for passing Malay or Chinese Special Programme, two points for junior college affiliation. At most four bonus points can be deducted, unless you are applying for junior colleges with Malay or Chinese Language Elective Programme.

Missing the junior college cutoff will not necessarily break your application. If you are talented in sports or performing arts, or have outstanding achievements in your school CCAs, junior colleges may still accept you under the Direct School Admission scheme.
