La Guiole is an especially treasured French cutlery,  as it was begun during the Sun King's reign and it bears the symbol of the Royal Household, the Bee.

It is a highly favored tradition in France, used at the best and most intimate of settings, and is treasured, cared for and handed down through the generations.

Wooden Knife Blocks

There are many wooden cutlery blocks out there to choose from. However, from the standpoint of making your knives last, and keeping them sharp, it is far and away best to store them on their SIDES.

Most cutlery blocks have upright slots to put the knives in, which dulls their blade. Of course as you know, a dull knife is far more dangerous in the kitchen than a very sharp one.

So the best chefs and experts prefer storing their knives in hardwood blocks with the slots going sideways.
