Early label printing methods

Stanton R Avery had no idea that the self adhesive label industry would become so enormous when he first created the self adhesive label.

Using borrowed money, he designed his first label printer with second-hand parts from everything from a washing machine to a sewing machine.

The equipment placed a sticky layer on the paper, then a laminated liner that had silicone to allow for an easy release. The process, now known as Avery Adhesives, was originally named Kum Kleen.

Initially,flexible rubber printing plates were used in flexographic printing resulting in poor standard. These days we use the flexographic method of printing to get label printing done.

Photopolymer is much more sturdy and is the principal material used to make the printing plates used for flexo label printing. As these printing plates are quite often digitized directly from computer, quality standards which were previously never heard of are possible to achieve.

Combination printing presses are utilized mostly by the label printing industry. Using the latest in printing technologies, these presses are able to create self-adhesive labels that are of excellent quality.

It is not unusual for a modern label printing press to have twelve printing stations to meet the industry's high quality standards As today's market deminds visual sophistication, it is necessary to use a combination including UV flexographic, gravure, lithographic and hot foil printing stations

If you consider the evolution of the self-adhesive label industry from its inception in 1935, it is quite amazing. Despite wars,recessions,and slow downs this is one industry which has remained on its impressive levels of continued growth.
