Training Your Labrador Retriever

Sit, Stay a while, and Sniff around!

Labrador Retriever Training, as all Dog Training is a must. Training your companion is more than just telling him/her to stop doing what he's doing, it is an ongoing process of teaching.

Labrador Retriever exhibit certain desires of behavior specific to their breed and/or circumstances. But for any breed, proper dog training is never a "quick fix" - it is a commitment and dedication throughout your dogs life.

In today's society many people like to take their dogs every where they go. Most folks don't object to be near a well behaved dog.

Dog Owner Training

It isn't just your dog that needs training, but you, as his/her owner as well. Actually, it should be called Dog Owner Training, as it is all about learning how to communicate with your friend.

All dog training, is not created equal. Positive, kind enforcement through repetition, patience and play is quickly becoming the preferred method of Labrador Retriever Training and with this method of training you will be successful with just about every dog.

Your Puppy

Puppies, and of course am a little bias for Black Labs are one of the most adorable little animals. They are mischievous and as you will find out quickly, tirelessly playful. You will be exhausted before them, especially when they become young adults. They also provid some of the most endearing and entertaining Kodak moments to treasure for the rest of your life. That seemly droll and every so cuddly bundle of black fur is incredibly lovable. Oh.. Labrador puppies are just about the cutest creatures.
Taking your puppy or adult dog to a local community training class is a great way for him/her to learn and socialize with other dogs and you might enjoy meeting other dog-lovers.

Sit Stay Fetch

The most basic of dog training is to get your dog to Sit, STAY and Fetch. As mentioned before, proper Labrador Retriever Training is not a "quick fix": it is an almost every single day, one way or another, ongoing life-long process.

"Sit" is probably the first thing you will teach your dog to do. It is easy and most dog-owner succeed of teaching that command.

"Stay" no matter where nor what else is going on. Much more difficult and a VERY IMPORTANT command for your dog to understand and obey. You will find yourself in need of professional guidance to be successful.

"Fetch" not that hard to teach, especially if you own a Labrador Retriever, they love to fetch balls or other objects (but never a stick or stone-hard objects, danger of serious injuries) It teaches your dog that coming back to you, that the command "come here" or "back" is related to praises and possible treats.

Did you "Fetch" the lesson in that sentence?

Never, upon catching your dog doing something he is not supposed to do, or if he is not doing something he is supposed to, never tell him to "come here" and then scold him when he does come to you. Always GO TO to him or her. Otherwise your dog will quickly associated the command "come here" with your scolding and displeasure, instead of praises.

It is all about communication.

Labrador Retrievers love to swim and play in the water

It may surprise you though, that even Labrador Retrievers need to be taught how to swim. Never assume that your dog will instinctively know how to swim. Never and under no circumstances should he/she be tossed over the edge of a pool or boat.

Best way to introduce your pup to deep water is a calm warm lake. You wade into the water with him or carry him. Before letting him down into the water, turn around and face the shore, perhaps even someone the puppy knows is waiting there for him/her with encouraging coaxes. As you let him into the water support him under his belly and gently hold his tail up to keep him level.

When he is paddling vigorously remove your hand from under his belly and then let go of his tail. Your dog will soon gain confidence and discover the joy of water and swimming. You both will enjoy many hours of frolicking in the water together.

If you are an avid boater, remember that all family members need to wear life-vests. Yes, even your pooch!
