Information On The Labrador Retriever

Of the hundreds of breeds of dog available today, one breed with an incredible history behind it is the Labrador Retriever. Labrador Retrievers are actually one of the first dogs to be recognized in history, and this was in England in the year 1903. A little over a decade later, in 1917, the breed was registered in the American Kennel Club.

Although Labradors Retrievers were first recognized in England they originated in Newfoundland, Canada. Their stature remains relatively the same. The Labrador's coat is a waterproof one with short, straight hairs in the topcoat and a soft undercoating. Although their appearance is certainly attractive, the most appealing aspect of Labrador Retrievers is their temperament. They are very friendly, loving and devoted dogs, and make an ideal family pet. They are also generally free of aggression and happy to play for hours on end, and so they are even suitable for families with young children.
In the earlier years, Labrador Retrievers were used for actual fishing, as the fishermen would need a small dog to get in and out of the boat. It was also important that the dog have a short, waterproof coat, in order to avoid having large amounts of water coming into the boat as the dog came in and out. The Labrador Retriever was perfectly suitable for this, and they also had a natural strong retrieving instinct to help retrieve fish and swimming lines.

By the time the turn of the century came about, Labrador Retrievers were appearing in the British Kennel Club's events and while there have been strains of Labradors up to this time it is still unknown just how many of these dogs were folded into Labradors or into other breeds as the registrations began to separate. Labradors were first imported to the United States during World War I, and it was then that they began being used more as a gun dog.
It is easy to see that the history of the Labrador Retriever is very long and significant. It is important for any potential Labrador Retriever owner to be educated not only on the history of these dogs but also on what your reasons are for choosing this breed. One of the nicest things is that Labrador Retrievers are great indoor and outdoor dogs and so whether you want to have the dog indoors as a family pet or you are the outdoor type and like to hunt they are the ideal dog for you.

There are really too many benefits to the Labrador Retriever to be able to list them all in detail, and as long as you are aware of the different benefits and have a good reason for getting one of these dogs for yourself, then you should not have any problems. By being aware of the breed's history and temperament you will really be better off. Getting a dog is a long-term commitment, one that you should take incredibly seriously and ensure that you are choosing the right breed for you and your lifestyle.

The Labrador is one of the most favored breeds of dog in the world because they offer so many wonderful and beneficial qualities. If you are interested in finding out more Labrador information about the history of these Retrievers, head to your local library or bookstore where you will find a comprehensive selection of Labrador books.

I love my lab sooooooo much. It would be hard to live with out him i think i would die. my dog thinks hes runs the house. we have him trained pretty well but i think he has us trained even better he gets free food a free place to live a cat to chase all the love and exsersie he could take and he has such human expressions its kind of scary. he acually smiles frowns and board its really funny because when he is board or just wants atention he will gron or moan at you too get you attention and give you his two bits on the sitouation. he is five years old and acts like he is a 2 month old puppy. it cracks me up.
