Labyrinth the Movie

The 1986 film directed by Jim Henson, and produced by George Lucas, the plotline follows Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a naive dreamer, as she races through a mystical labyrinth, befriending numerous creatures along the way, in a desparate attempt to save her baby brother, Toby, before The Goblin King (David Bowie) turns him into a goblin...forever. With a script conceived by children's author, Dennis Lee, and Monty Python alumnus, Terry Jones, this film has seduced audiences for two decades.

David Bowie - Underground

This is the music video for "Underground" by David Bowie from the film "Labyrinth". If you like this video, I urge you to go ahead and buy the "Best of Bowie" DVD. It's got everything including the video for "As the World Falls Down". And, there are subtleties to the video that you don't get when it's put through the YouTube encoder/filter/thingie.

Trivia from the Movie

The exchange "You remind me of the babe" "What babe?" etc. is reminiscent of dialogue from The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947). "You remind me of a man" "What man?" etc.

Monty Python member Terry Jones wrote one early version of the script. Little of his material was retained beyond the point where Sarah eats the poisoned peach.

The baby who plays Toby is 'Toby Froud' , son of Brian Froud who was the conceptual designer for both this movie and The Dark Crystal (1982), another Jim Henson production.

The full costume for Hoggle was lost for some time. It was later found at an unclaimed baggage store in Scottsboro, Alabama and is now on display in their museum.

The sources of the characters can be seen in Sarah's bedroom at the beginning of the movie. She has a stuffed animal that looks like Sir Didymus on her shelves, a doll that looks like Ludo near her window, a Firey doll on a shelf, a statue of Hoggle as a bookend, and a figurine of Jareth the Goblin King on the right hand side of her desk. Also, the dress that she wears in the ballroom scene is the same as the one on her music box doll, and the marble labyrinth game is the same as the hedge maze that comes later. There is also a small painting of a machine that closely resembles the machine with the giant rotating blades used by the "cleaners".

After you see the Hoggle bookend, there is a scrapbook shown. It shows newspaper clippings of Sarah's famous actress mom with another man, David Bowie.

Cheryl McFadden, one of the choreographers, also goes by the name Gates McFadden. McFadden plays Dr. Beverly Crusher in the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) and in the Star Trek movies: Star Trek: Generations (1994); Star Trek: First Contact (1996); Star Trek: Insurrection (1998); and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002).

In Sarah's room can be found posters and playbills from such musicals as Cats, Evita and La Cage aux Folles.

Terry Jones' original script ended with Sarah punching and kicking Jareth, then watching him shrink down until he's becomes a small and "snivelling" goblin. Also, Toby's name was Freddie in the early drafts of the story.

David Bowie was one of the three choices for Jareth. The other two were Michael Jackson and Sting.

To help the actor playing him to see, there is a video camera in Ludo's horns.
