In 1933, Lacoste was found as French apparel company by Rene Lacoste who was a famous tennis player because he was started to wear his own tailored Polo Shirt in tennis. Green crocodile logo is the symbol to recognize the company. Also Lacoste has the reputable values in preppy culture especially in United States.

In 1926, Rene Lacoste has got two major victories one is tennis and another is fashion. At the time when Rene won U.S open championship he was wearing his own created jersey petit pique tailored by knitted fabric with short-sleeves, and that was the moment when Lacoste starts to built its name in fashion lines, after that in 1927 in the mid continuity of Davis Cup press passionately nicked name Rene Lacoste as "the Alligator" because of bet made for an alligator-skin suitcase. The nickname for Rene stuck him in the courts because wowing is never giving up hi prey. Then Lacoste's friend drew him a crocodile which was them embroiled on his shirt which he wears in the courts. After retirement of Rene Lacoste from tennis he founded La Societe Chemise Lacoste with Andre Gillier, who was the owner and president of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm at that time and they started to produce tennis shirts appliqué embroidered on the chest, serving as the first example of a brand name appearing on the outside of an article of clothing.

In 1951 company expands its production and designing from simple white to color T-shirts. In 1952 this shirt was exported to United States and advertised as symbol of competent sportsman which influences clothing choice of upper class.  In 1963 the leadership of the company transfers to Rene's son Bernard Lacoste at the moment when the company was at the peak of its popularity and sales of its fashion apparel in United States, and by 1970s Lacoste becomes a brand name when the tennis shirt became an essential of the preppy wardrobe, The company also began to introduces its variety of products like deck shoes, walking shoes, watches, and various leather goods, shorts, perfume, optical and sunglasses, tennis shoes.

Between 1970s and 80s Lzod and Lacoste were often used with the term because 1950s Lzod Lacoste known as Lacoste official producers of fashion wear under licensed in United States. In 1993 this partnership was end and Lacoste individually holds the rights to produce its apparels.

More recently, Christophe Lemaire's a French designer who surged more victories for Lacoste by creating more modern, upscale look and because of that by 2005 almost 50 million products of Lacoste are sold in 110 countries, and several tennis players are contracted for the promotion of the famous brand like Andy Roddick and French rising young prospect Richard Gasquet. Also Lacoste has begun to tailor its sporting shirts for Golf. As of 2006, Lacoste officially licensed its trademark to various companies. For example, Pentland Brands has the exclusive worldwide license to produce Lacoste footwear, Devanlay owns the exclusive worldwide clothing license, and Samsonite holds the worldwide license to produce Lacoste bags and small leather goods.
