How to Play Lacrosse

by Chess McDoogle

Lacrosse is a great sport which combines agility and athleticism with toughness and speed. Want to learn how to play lacrosse? Here are the steps to take to learn how to play lacrosse.

1. Get yourself a Lacrosse Stick.

These can be purchased online or at your local sporting goods store. Not all sporting stores carry lacrosse sticks, so call before hand and check. Now there are 2 kinds of sticks (3 actually including the goalie, but we will just concentrate on the 2 main types). There is a stick for offense which is the standard type size you've probably seen before. And then there is a defensive stick which is much longer. I would go with a standard stick to start with, unless you know for sure your going to want to play defense.

2. Work the stick.

By working the stick I first mean just getting comfortable with it. Hold it, swing with it, move it around and so forth. Next you will want to learn how to "cradle". Take a lacrosse ball and put it in the net. By moving your stick left to right quickly with your wrist, the ball will maintain itself inside the net, and won't fall out. You are "cradling" the ball inside the net, rotating the head back and forth quickly. Practice cradling without a ball to get the motion down. Watch yourself in front of a mirror. It takes some practice, but once you got it, cradling will feel like second nature.

3. Get a Workout Routine.

Lacrosse is a very unique sport and you need to train and condition for it properly. Not only will you need to do shooting drills, passing drills, and running/pivoting drills, but there also conditioning drills which will make you a much better player. The good news is that with the internet you can learn all these drills and practice them on your own. I recommend a good lacrosse workout site (like the one below) so you have a one stop spot where you can learn and practice everything you need to know about how to play lacrosse and train correctly for it.

Lacrosse Drills

by Chess McDoogle

Here are 3 lacrosse drills, separated into throwing, scooping, and agility. The key is repetition and perfecting each drill so it becomes natural and automatic. Lacrosse drills will greatly improve your game, turning you into a much better player.

Lacrosse Drills:

Throwing Drills
Throwing drills focus on both passing and scoring. Set up a situation where you are passing back and forth with your partner. Keep up a steady back and forth pace until your partner yells out "shoot", then throws to you and you score. The back and forth repetition ingrains in you a real game play situation, where the transition from passing, catching and scoring becomes automatic, natural, and in turn accurate.

Scooping Drills
Set up a series of balls in a row. Scoop the first ball at one end, cradle and run past the end of the opposite row. Drop and scoop from the other row and continue until are scooped. There are many variation you can work with scooping drills. The key is constant repetition to the point where scooping is completely natural and totally automatic, so you will not only never miss a scoop during game play, but your movement will be quick, accurate and explosive.

Agility Drills
Have your partner stand stationary and practice running, cradling and spinning off and past your partner. Do this on both sides, add variations, and repeat this over and over. Next, have your partner add some motion to his position. Allow him one big step on either side and practice your agility drills. After several one steps, allow him free range of motion and work your agility against him full throttle.
