My Launch Story

How Handmade Photo Albums turned into an eBay Consulting Business

In March 2006, having started my own side business, Iris & Lily which was picking up, I decided to go freelance in my "real" job and concentrate some more time on my entrepreneurial venture. The side effect? Every day I woke up in a cold sweat over what I had done. I'd given up a good management job with benefits and security to do my own thing. Crazy.

About a week after I'd announced my decision to senior management, my husband showed me an article in the Daily News about Ladies Who Launch. I immediately checked out the website and then signed up for the incubator in NY. I didn't know what I was walking into.

After the first meeting, I left so inspired and motivated, I couldn't believe I had never done something like this before. By meeting #4, I was hooked. I had new ideas and a new confidence that I could do what I'd set out to do and do it well.

My vision has changed along the way, and Ladies Who Launch has kept me going. I met my business partner in my eBay consulting business, OASIS Connect through LWL and I've also become the LWL incubator leader on Long Island, where I've met so many incredible women also launching businesses.

Being in your own business can be isolating. Ladies Who Launch provides that camaraderie we all need to keep moving forward with our dreams. Not to mention all the great resources you end up with!

Oh, and that "secure" company I left last year? It was taken over by another company, and is not so secure anymore. Phew! In hindsight, I'm so glad I jumped when I did!

You Know When You Need to Get Out of the Office!

As entrepreneurs, we business owners take care of many things during the day. But, do we take care of that most important person... ourselves?

Learn 10 ways to stay active and healthy in the course of your business day!

Don't stay at your desk and in front of your computer all day. Make it a point to get up in between meetings and projects---stretch, take a quick walk around your house or office, walk around while on the phone, take your dogs for a walk, or meet a friend or fellow entrepreneur for a healthy lunch.
Replace soda, juice, coffee or tea with a glass of water. Start with one glass and keep replacing your normal beverages with water until it becomes second nature.
Replace a sit-down meeting with a 'walk & talk' outside. Or when you need creative solutions, try to break for a walk or run. It works!
To incorporate fitness into a busy schedule, find something that you truly enjoy: biking, walking, swimming, gardening. Find a buddy to work out with you.
As we rush through our days, it's often easier to find hit the fast food restaurant for lunch. Try to select the healthier menu choices. Minimize salad dressings and condiments, think moderation, and drink water!
Prepare and eat healthy snacks - fruits, veggies, nuts, protein bars, fruit smoothies, salads, creative sandwiches.
Think Green-by thinking about how you can contribute to a more eco-friendly environment, you will ultimately improve the Earth's health, which has a direct impact on your health. Turn off office lights, only print final versions of documents, and see if you can take a walk instead of driving for one errand.
Educate yourself on being healthy and active. Visit a professional to determine your current state of health and what you can endure, speak to a fitness trainer, read books and articles, and speak to the active and healthy people around you.
