Lake Erie Artists Gallery | Transformation to a Fresh New Look at Shaker Square

From Old Gallery to New | Watch as the Process Takes Place on this Lens

This lens is a picture journal of transformation as we move our gallery, Lake Erie Artists Gallery from downtown Cleveland, Ohio to Shaker Square, our new home on the border of Shaker Heights and Cleveland.

This is going to be a very exciting process for me, because we are starting from scratch with a fresh new look and building the new gallery from ground up. This is our real first permanent location, and I can't thank Coral Company enough for giving us the opportunity to find our home in the historic shopping district of Shaker Square.

Part of this story will be chronicled in my blog, which will feed to this lens, and the rest will be a picture gallery of changes as we go through the process. So you will need to check back periodically to see how far we have gotten.

(Between April 17, 2009 and June 1, 2009 I will be adding progress pictures and anecdotes of the progress of the move.)

This lens idea came from Wysiwigs so make sure to check out her lenses too!

Preparing to Move--Painting the New Gallery (starting Wednesday, April 22, 2009)

My husband, Jack, and I spent the last two days painting the new gallery. We got a lot done by the end of Thursday, April 23, but not the entire gallery. The left wall as you come in the gallery is finished. It is the accent wall in a shade of teal. I was a bit worried when we opened the paint can and the paint looked like a pastel shade, but it dried much darker.

Before we could paint, we had to remove the hundreds of screw anchors left in the wall from shelving, and patch the holes. Then we sanded the patchwork, and started to paint.

The colors were picked to match our logo, and to be warm, happy colors. The teal looks really good and eye-catching. The other color, which is white with some mustard yellow mixed in, is taking two coats to cover the brown that was on the walls. Once we complete the second coat I think it will look really good too.

Then we have to paint the woodwork. That will probably be done later this week, but the big jewelry cases are being moved in Monday, so that area of the store has to be completely finished by this weekend.

Major Move Day

Monday April 27, 2009

Today the movers are coming to move our large jewelry cases and furniture. I rented a Uhaul cargo van, and Jack and I started moving some larger fixtures yesterday. After the cases get moved today, I am making two more trips to shift merchandise and fixtures to the new store.

Hmmm. . .I wonder how many calories that burns.

My truck is loaded with water. I will be glad when the moving is over and the organization can begin.

Getting Set Up

Week of May 25, 2009

The painting has taken much longer than we thought, and it has been very tiring, but the first two rooms of the gallery are finally done, and it is time to set up the store for the opening on Monday, June 1. The entire family has been involved with painting and cleaning, even Bryn took up a brush.

New artists are starting to deliver their work this week. I think that it will take another month until we get everything ordered and in the store the way it should be, but at least the front two rooms will be set up mostly by Monday, and we will open and continue finishing the last room the first week of June.

God in the Gallery: A Christian Embrace of Modern Art

Siedell likens Christians' encounter with modern and contemporary fine art to St. Paul's discovery of the altar to an unknown god on Mars Hill (Acts 17:23). Responding to those who have called for a separate Christian art (particularly Francis Schaeffer and H.R. Rookmaaker), he strives to reveal what modern art is only able to point to, not to name. Siedell uses his in-depth knowledge as former art curator and current assistant professor of art history at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to argue that perceptions of this legitimate cultural practice can be nourished by a robust Nicene Christianity. These disparate essays tackle subjects both ambitious (a history of modern art) and esoteric (a single work by artist Enrique Martínez Celaya; the conflict between art critics Harold Rosenberg and Clement Greenberg). Siedell's love of contemporary art is obvious, but his sometimes abstruse writing doesn't always clarify his formidable subject; indeed, it may reinforce some Christians' view of modern art as unapproachable. His primary audience is clearly art specialists, whether students or professionals; Siedell's interesting thesis may not reach the larger audience it deserves.

"God in the Gallery is a seminal work of interpretation, a guide for skeptics and faithful alike, in which Siedell offers a most profound, encouraging survey of contemporary art. An Emmaus Road encounter for those traveling on the path of contemporary art, Siedell's careful and loving attention paid to known and unknown artists will surely open our eyes. A must read for all of us laboring in the art world and in the arts academia."Makoto Fujimura, artist; founder/creative director, International Arts Movement

Art Dealer's Field Guide: How to Profit in Art, Buying and Selling Valuable Paintings

Among the most exquisite achievements of mankind, art, especially old paintings, can enrich your life, beautify the home or office, and gain impressive value while just hanging on the wall. This book examines art, especially valuable paintings. Not a coffee-table art book, but a book with information that will be priceless for those who apply the principles to be learned here. It will take years off your journey in becoming a successful art collector, investor, or dealer. Shortening the learning curve and turning your art apprenticeship into a profitable enterprise, this book will save you time and money. It will help you avoid costly mistakes while revealing how to create opportunities in art where none existed previously for you. Written for the new collector and investor, this book will be an invaluable reference guide for even the experienced dealer. You will find contact telephone numbers, Web sites, and trade information. Learn here the mind-set and game plan of the art collector, investor, and dealer because each has a different motivation, buying and selling strategy, and outcome objective. We will focus on the art dealer of old paintings. He is the professional who earns his living buying and selling art. We will examine his techniques, strategies, and business practices. Because the dealer buys, sells, and negotiates art transactions every day, he has more art know-how-more insider techniques up his sleeve, as it were-than either the collector or the investor. The collector and the investor need to learn what the dealer knows, acquiring the skills of the art dealer. This book aims to equip you with the parallel skills and abilities as those of the art dealer, so that you can buy and sell art for a profit.

Moving Forward

Making changes for the future

Self-help expert Dave Pelzer teaches readers how to let go of the past and use negative experiences to make them stronger when tackling the future.

"Learning from our prior experiences, we can, and should, aspire to fulfill our dreams, making life better not only for ourselves but for others around us," Dave writes in the introduction. "I am of the belief that you do not have to be a mayor of a major metropolis or CEO of a Fortune 500 company in order to take a stand for your convictions; to lead, rally, or educate others for your cause; or to maintain a vision that will pave the way for other generations to come. The everyday, hardworking folks, God bless 'em, have and always will continue to, day in and day out, truly make an impact on their families, communities, jobs, America, and the world as a whole."

Dave Pelzer walks readers through the process of learning how to turn the experience gained from past hurts into the power to live a better life and help others do the same with his trademark wisdom, support, and tough love. (2008)
