The History of Lake George
Lake George was originally known to the Mohawk as "Andiatarocté." One of the first white men to visit Lake George in 1646 was Father Isaac Jogues, a Jesuit missionary who called the lake, "Lac du Saint Sacrement." War soon broke out between Europe and North America and spanned over 100 years, ending with the American Revolution. The lake retained the name, "Lac du Saint Sacrement" until 1755. Sir William Johnson renamed it to "Lake George" in honor of England's King George II.
The first battle fought in Lake George between the English and French during the French and Indian war was the "Battle of Lake George." The bike path bordered by Rt. 9 on the north and Rt. 149 on the south marks the location of the first part of the battle: "The Bloody Morning Scout." Colonel Ephraim Williams was killed in this battle. In this area, visitors can visit the site of Bloody Pond and pay respect to the Monument marking the site where Col. Ephraim Williams was killed.
After his death, Colonel Williams' remaining troops retreated to the shores of Lake George where fighting continued to take place at what is now known a Fort George Park. Additional monuments and markers commemorate the events that took place there.
Fort William Henry, located on the southern shore of Lake George, became famous world wide in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans. Here General Montcalm ordered 12,500 French and Indian allies to attach the Fort which was defended by a few 2,200 colonial troops. The log fortress was quickly overtaken by the French and quickly surrendered.
Terms of the surrender were to include the safe passage of women, children, and soldiers to nearby Fort Edward. However, the Indian allies disobeyed Montcalm's orders and hundreds of British and Colonial citizens were massacred in what is known as "the Siege and Massacre.
The Northern end of Lake George is rich in history. Visitors can enjoy exploring the land where Abercrombie's huge army landed, where Major Robert Rogers and the Rangers were battered in the Battle on Snowshoes. Fort Ticonderoga is a well known U.S. h

Beneath the Surface (Lake George Mysteries)
It's a glorious June morning in upstate New york and thirty-four year old Loren Graham, the recently elected mayor of sleeepy little Emerald Point, has found the perfect spot on the Lake George shoreline for her morning run. Perfect, that is, until she encounters a car submerged in the lake and a dead body on the shore.
Unexpected events which appear to be connected to the murder keep Loren on edge. There are also rumors about the owners of the hotels and motels where the young girl worked and curious notes in a journal she kept.
Another murder and a freak tornado keep Loren on her toes as she tracks a killer in her small lakeside town.
An Affinity for Murder (A Lake George Mystery)
Two dead art experts and a secret cache of paintings which may have been the work of Lake George's most famous summer resident, Georgia O'Keeffe, set writer Ellen Davies on a collision course with danger. Ellen thinks she's stumbled on a multi-million dollar find which will send her career in journalism soaring. But, as with other recently discovered O'Keeffe paintings, nothing is one hundred percent certain...and Ellen may not live long enough to uncover the truth.
Lake George Reflections: Island History and Lore
In Lake George Reflections Frank Leonbruno has recounted his experience of forty-two years as a New York State ranger on Lake George from 1941 to 1983, the last ten years as Supervisor of Lake George Operations. This book is manifold and is based on Leonbruno's own reminiscences, conversations with Lake George area natives and campers, and his own research into historical documents. It relates the history of individual islands-- both private and state owned. The book addresses important environmental issues, specifically focusing on the severe erosion which is occurring on many of the islands. Not only is Lake George Reflections an important book for everyone who knows and loves the lake, and a wonderful introduction for all others, it is the definitive book on camping on the Lake George islands.
