"Where I call Home"

Beautiful Lake Lanier, where I call home.  At a very early age my parents would go fishing and we would camp on Lake Lanier.  When I grew up the fun continued with boating, skiing, and more camping trips.  I always wanted a home on the lake.  My dream came true in 1998 when I moved into my little cottage with an awesome eastern view of the lake.  The view is especially pretty in the winter time.  It feels like we are on vacation all the time.

This lens is devoted to all things fun in and around the lake.  Add your information, links, comments, your rating, and be sure and sign our guestbook, especially if you are one of the lucky ones to be a Lake Lanier resident.

Lake Lanier Facts

Why 50 this year?

* It is true that Lake Lanier began forming in 1956 when the gates of Buford dam closed, and didn't reach full pool, until 1959.

* 1957 is when the lake opened for business, both for recreation and power.

* The first power generation from the damn came on June 17, 1957.

* July 4, 1957, Holiday Marina opened for business, becoming the first marina operating on the lake.

* Named for 19th century poet Sidney Clopton Lanier, Georgia native and author of "Song of the Chattahoochee."

* At 38,000+ acres, is the largest lake in Georgia

* Touches five counties - Hall, Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin, and Gwinnett.

* Includes some 60 parks and 10 marinas

* Original intent of the lake, as created by Congress in the 1940s, was for power generation, flood control, water supply, and transportation.

Elvis has left the building

and Patsy Cline too!

Update on Classic's Pub and Elvis - Before Christmas 2007 the county approached Ms. Kat and made her an offer she couldn't refuse. It was take it or be condemned. So with great fanfare and sadness of almost 20 years, Classic's closed and was torn down for a parking lot for the county.

Some of the beloved bartenders and staff can now be found at a nearby restaurant, Austin's, but it's just not the same. However, you will find many of the regulars there and at Good Old Days.

For those who still want to see an Elvis show, the former Lantern Inn has been re-opened and is now Harbor Lights. I haven't personally seen the Elvis show myself so can't make a recommendation, but I'm sure you will find many of the locals and of course the 'lake crowd.' It is one of the few places you can go by boat for a fun time on the lake.

I would still recommend checking out Damon Hendrix, who used to perform at Classic's. Here is "Elvis" website http://damonhendrix.com/index.html. He has his schedule published on the website. You might find another opportunity to go and see him. I am a long time Elvis fan and I've seen many impersonators, and I must say he is one of the best I've ever seen or heard.
