100 Years of Girl Scouting!

I have been a member of Girl Scouts for almost 15 years. I have been a leader, adult trainer, volunteer committee member for various committee (including one national girl convention) and service team member. I love Girl Scouting (and if you cut me, I'll probably bleed green!)!

I have compiled all my Girl Scout lenses into one place. If you are a scout leader, I hope you can find some useful information.

Girl Scout Camping

When you ask someone about Girl Scouts, one of the first things they will say is ... camping (we'll get to the other one!). Camping is a great experience for every girl. It gives them a chance to learn new skills (taking care of their own "stuff", working together to create a meal, and dealing with "outdoor" noises!). Parents are usually very surprised to find out what their girls can do when Mom isn't there!

I plan on writing more camping lenses. I will be writing a lens on "Dump Cakes" (if I can ever get a photo before the girls devour it!) and some general outdoor cooking. I also will have more lenses on themes for camporees. If you have any ideas/information you would like to know more about Girl Scout camping, please include a comment below.

Girl Scout Leaders

Girl Scout leaders are volunteers - they are not paid. Let me repeat that - there is NO pay for being a Girl Scout leader. They are angels! They do a tremendous amount of work (a full time job really!) and give girls skills that will last them a lifetime. Thank You Girl Scout leaders and volunteers!

Girl Scout Holidays

There are three important days in Girl Scouts. The first big holiday in Girl Scouting is when Girl Scouts began - their birthday - March 12, 1912. That also means that Girl Scouts will be celebrating 100 years this year!

The next important day in Girl Scouts is celebrating the birthday of the founder - Juliette Gordon Low. Her birthday is October 31. This makes for a great time to have parties to celebrate her birthday.

The last important day in Girl Scouts is World Thinking Day - February 22. This is the day that Girl Scouts/Girl Guides from around the world "think" about their sister scouts. Troops in the United States usually celebrate the day by learning about other countries and sharing the information with fellow troops.

Girl Scout History

Girl Scouts has been around almost 100 years. There has been a lot of changes within those 100 years (thankfully we don't have to learn to work with signal flags anymore!). I'm sure there will be more changes to come!

Girl Scout Trips

Girl Scouts love getting out of their meeting space and exploring their world. You can take a trip to the local supermarket or pet store. Or you can explore the capital or the home of Girl Scouts - Savannah, GA. When girls help plan a trip, they feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. When they get older they can even travel internationally!

Other Girl Scout Ideas

There are also lenses that I have written that just don't fit into any special category.

Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles sponsored a float in the 2012 Rose Parade. To help support and fund the float they sold packs of zinnia seeds.

I love collecting Girl Scout "stuff". With over 100 years, there is a lot of "stuff" to be collected!
