Lake Wylie

Lake Wylie is located on the North Carolina and South Carolina border near Charlotte. It is the oldest lake of the eleven on the Catawba River Chain. Originally named Catawba Lake, it was formed with the construction of the Wylie Dam in 1904.

In 1960, the lake was renamed to Lake Wylie in honor of Dr. Walker Gill Wylie, the former president of Southern Power Company. Duke Power has managed the lake since its merger with Southern Power Company in 1927.

The long and narrow Lake Wylie stretches 32 miles from the Mountain Island Dam on the northern end to the Wylie Dam on the southern end.

The Lake Wylie Marine Commission monitors the safety and environmental aspects both on and around the lake.

Lake Wylie supports the Wylie Hydroelectric Station, the Allen Steam Station and the Catawba Nuclear Station with cooling water. Lake Wylie is also the sourc of drinking water for Belmont, NC and Rock Hill, SC..

94 feet deep at maximum depth (the average depth is 23 feet)

Duke Energy provides six public boat access areas around the lake. There are also several private marinas and access points around the lake.

Lake Wylie Fishing

Lake Wylie is well-known as an excellent place for fisherman of all types. The Lake has many species including largemouth bass, crappie, white perch, bream (bluegill and many others), catfish, carp, and others.

Lake Wylie was home to the 2004 Bassmaster's Classic - the event deemed as the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing. Annually, the lake is home to many fishing tournaments including the Bassmasters Series and the Wal-mart FLW series. In addition, Lake Wylie was chosen as only one of five lakes in the country to be featured in Rapala's video game for the Nintendo Wii entitled Fishing Frenzy.

    Excellent! I am in Lake Wylie as we speak, awaiting the birth of my daughter's twins tomorrow! I think it's a great place for daughter and her husband to live and my grandchildren to grow up! 5* and favored.
