Lalique Antique Perfume Bottle

The other day, as I was watching 'the best of' the Antique Road Show on TV, one of the guests, named Lou, was on the show with a very pretty, tiara shaped, Lalique crystal perfume bottle. He was showing it to, and speaking with, one of the appraisers, Louise Luther, durring the episode made in Miami Florida, back in 2001.

Come to find out that back in the 70's, Lou had purchased this Lalique perfume bottle with the R. Lalique (René Lalique) signature for $110.00 from an antitque dealer friend of his.

Lou had no idea what a Lalique Perfume bottle was. Much less how much antique Lalique perfume bottles could be worth. All his friend had told told him was, "that'll be worth a lot of money someday", so he bought it.

Well "Someday" did come along, because when Lou brought it to the Antique Road show that day, all he knew was that he had a pretty little piece of Lalique antique glass.

That was until he met up with Louise Luther and you will not believe what she told him...

What Louise Told Lou About His Lalique Perfume Bottle

( R. Lalique 1860 - 1945 )

When Lou sat down with Louise, he had no idea what his little piece of Lalique history was worth.  Luckily for him, Louise was about to tell him some very good news...

"It is indeed a Lalique perfume. It is called "The Blackberry," and it has what we call a tiara stopper. You see how narrow it is and it fits on there like a tiara on a crown of a lady's head, and fits in there very nicely. It has a number on the bottom. And the number on the bottom of the perfume itself corresponds with the number on the stopper. When they ground the stopper to fit the base, rather than get it mixed up with somebody else's stopper, they would put the same number on the base as on the top. Although Lalique made perfumes in the beginning of his work... First he did jewelry, then he did some perfumes. And made this one in about 1920, the early 1920s, '21 perhaps, shortly after World War I. He made it in black with a black top and black stripes on the base. And he made it in an amber color, almost a reddish amber color. But blue is rare. He made a darker blue than this one. This is very unusual. And I think you are very fortunate to have bought it at the level you did. This perfume today is worth roughly $20,000 to $25,000. And it's because of the color. It's a great color, Lou."

Not only was it a "great color", it was a great investment.  From $110.00 to $25,000.00 with little to no work, is a great deal.  Lou was left speachless, and I am sure that jaws dropped around the nation as people heard the value of such a fine piece of artwork made by René Lalique, so long ago.  I know that mine did

René Lalique Today

The good news is...  You can still find and buy Lalique crystal, glass, figurines, and art work today. And it need not cost you an arm and a leg to do so, as long as you are a frugal shopper.

Granted, your piece may not go up in value as fast, or as high as lucky Lou's did, but that is not why you should have a Lalique collectable.
