The Lamaze Technique is a prepared childbirth technique used as an alternative to medical intervention during labor.

Lamaze childbirth classes teach expectant couples breathing techniques and other ways to work with the labor process to reduce the pain often associated with childbirth.

Having gone through a Lamaze class and 2 child births, I thought it might be useful and fun to explore all the Lamaze videos and DVDs available on the web about the Lamaze method.

Why Watch Lamaze Videos?

Can they replace a live childbirth preparation class?

Nothing can quite replace the experience of "hands on" learning at a physical Lamaze class, but for some expectant parents this may not be possible.

However, the preparation for labor and birth is very important, if only to relieve anxiety of the unknown. These excellent videos are a great alternative to a live workshop, and also serve you well if you just want to brush up on your knowledge or practice some more in the comfort of your own home.

FREE Lamaze Videos?

Or why Free is not ALWAYS better...

We are so used to getting free stuff on the Internet I was surprised that I could not find any free instructional Lamaze videos on the web! Whatever I found on YouTube and other sites is either more for entertainment purposes, or just plain blatant advertising for something. Either way, none of them are really useful if you want to learn the Lamaze breathing techniques and birth preparation.

That being said, I found that Having Your Baby! and Laugh and Learn About Childbirth are both absolutely wonderful and comprehensive childbirth courses on DVD that are quite inexpensive. If you want to recover part of your purchase price you can always sell it on eBay if you have no more need for it. I'm sure it'll sell like hotcakes, and they're worth every penny.

Parents-to-be who are interested in the Lamaze method but can't attend a class will be happy to know they can learn it from this two-hour video.

Taught by two certified instructors who are OB nurses, this is the only video course that teaches the complete method.

Lamaze seeks to reduce pain through relaxation achieved by massage, focus, and a series of breathing techniques. The instructors share an easy rapport, demonstrating the exercises on each other before a roomful of couples and thoroughly explaining the purpose of labor, how to know when it begins, and its three stages. They describe medications and birth complications and include footage of both a natural Lamaze childbirth and a Caesarian delivery.

While this tape was clearly shot in the 1980s (the hair styles and fashions are amusingly outdated), it does have new computer-generated diagrams, and the medical information seems up to date. The Lamaze technique itself has not altered, of course, and this video remains the gold standard in that department. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Here are some great related videos that I think you will like. "In the Womb" by National Geographic is pretty spectacular, if you are interested in what goes on to the growing baby in the womb. Also very helpful if you have other kids asking you these types of questions. :-)
