A friend of mine who is a Lambretta Scooter enthusiast recently got knocked off his beloved machine by a careless taxi driver. Fortunately he wasn't badly hurt but when it came to his insurance claim things got painful! That's prompted me to use my 20 years experience in the insurance industry to create this guide and links to ensuring other Lambretta fans have the cover they deserve

A Classic in Every Sense...

Imagine having that stolen or smashed and then having to argue with your insurance company to get your beautiful machine replaced as you want it!

The Basics : What an Insurance Company basis a Risk ol

Those dreaded Underwriters!...

An insurance company will profile any risk based on it's previous experience. Factors like those listed below are those taken into account when pricing that risk, also known as calculating the premium and terms. Excuse me of this seems like basic stuff! Bear with me as it's all leading somewhere in understanding how the insurance business works and how by understanding it you can get the best type of cover at the best price for your Lambretta. Don't think 'cheapest' think best value for money! Think of it this way - If you're choosing an accessory to customise your scooter and give it those special finishig touches you don't go for the cheapest. The same should apply for your bike insurance.
Your occupation. This has a surprising influence on the price you pay for your insurance. Those clever guys the Actuaries will have all sorts of statistical data to prove that a tax inspector is a more careful driver than a circus perfomer!
Your address. Bikes are more likely to be stolen from an inner city area than a nice sleepy village. But bear in mind - do you live in a village but commute on your scooter into the city? And does the insurer know that!?
Your mileage. Is your pride and joy garaged all week in an air conditioned environment or are you hammering it into town every day as your workhorse?
Your age. A major factor! Argue as you might as a 19 year old the sad fact is that claims from young riders and drivers are far more frequent than those with some good old fashioned 'road sense' developed over the years.
The type and value of your scooter. Again, may be an obvious one but it's a key factor and once which should influence the broker and insurer you choose. I'll come onto those key decisions next...

Where to get the Best Deal on Scooter Insurance

It's not Cheapest - It's Best Value!

So where do you begin in your search for the best insurance cover for your beloved moped? The quote comparison engines are a good starting point as this will give you a flavour of what's available and an idea of premiums. You will also be amazed at the variations in premiums you'll see!
I say starting point as the specialist nature of your vehicle means it needs specialist consideration for insurance. If you were looking at a bog standard Ford Focus the motor quote comparison engines are fine but for your unique Lamretta you need something - excuse the pun - more bespoke.
If you have custom paintwork or handlebars, extended forks or any other personal additions to your beautiful machine you need to ensure the insurance company understands this and covers you for them. This is where speaking to a broker, and one with specialist knowledge of insuring bikes, scooters and mopeds comes into it's own.
A little time ringing round will really be worthwhile. Should the worst happen and your Lambretta be stolen or damaged, you want any repairs or replacement to be to the same high standard.

What about Helmets and Leathers?

... Not as Kinky as it sounds!

Another thing to think about when insuring your beloved Lambretta is what about the accessories you actually wear. In 'Insurance Speak' these are referred to as 'helmets and leathers.'
This is an odd one when it comes to insurance as some Household policies will cover it but some will specifically exclude it. Unless you want to spend hours reading the policy documentation I'd suugest you ask your broker!
Alternatively, cover for these items can be added to your motor insurance policy. This will typically cover your helmet, leathers, boots and gloves against damage caused by a motorcycle accident. There will be a limit so if you have anything really fancy check it's within the value. They're usucally quite generous though - for example, Bennets Insurance are offering cover up to £750 for this items at the moment.
Don't get caught out! If you're paying to insure your scooter make sure you have cover for everything else related.
