Wonderful. I didn't know this mini-parrot species existed until I came across this lens. In the London Zoo, they have some Hyacinth Macaws - absolutely magnificent looking huge parrots. I always go to pay attention to them - if you interact with them (and they aren't grouchy), by chatting to them, it can be quite fun to watch them respond - they seem to be interested in anyone who actually chats to them instead of just gawping.
  • wilddove6 Jun 30, 2011 @ 9:14 pm | delete
Oh yes! Hyacinths are beautiful birds! Big though...I try not to get underfoot.

My Mum works with wild birds, so she knows how important it is for us to have a lot of freedom at our house. She tries her best. I was born in captivity, so I wouldn't know how to be truly free without getting into a lot of trouble...so I guess it's a bit of a compromise.

accurate, precise and complete. I think this is the right way to approach to the adoption of any animal: first know what's possible, and then decide if you can give it a good life. I like this lens really a lot!

Hi Nemo My little bundle of joy doesn't bite for any reason except "play", and he's getting better at grasping a stern "NO BITING". Is there anything better for this? He LOVES the "Hand Monster" as a playmate, no fear whatsoever. He lets me do pretty much anything, if he doesn't like something he makes a low growl sound, and I stop. But he doesn't bite about it. It's really just play to him. Any suggestions?
  • wilddove6 Jul 22, 2010 @ 6:03 pm | delete
    HIYA!
If your little guy is a youngster, it's very normal for babies and juveniles to "test" surfaces with their beak, or not to know that they are biting or beaking too hard.

A stern "no biting!" doesn't really compute all that well to us birds. We don't understand your language, and since we love, love, love drama (the louder the cooler to us!), there is a possibility this can backfire eventually into rewarding biting.
Let me give you an example:

    Birdy bites.
    "Mom" yells, "NO BITING!"
Birdy thinks this is cool and exciting and loud and parrot-like, and bites again to get the reaction out of Mom.

See what I mean? These kind of actions...yelling, raising your voice, making a big deal out of the biting *can* actually end up reinforcing the bite eventually.

One of the very best ways to deal with biting is to do exactly what you are doing right now.....watching body language, and paying attention to your little guy's warnings that he doesn't want to be touched at the moment, or he's had enough of the "hand monster", and simply heed his request to stop *before* he has to escalate things into a full out bite.
Humans are particularly not very good at heeding those warnings, and we birds end up having to make it VERY clear that we've had enough...but it doesn't have to be that way...if you respect our space, and our need to have some down time, rest, or not be touched at the moment, we then know you "get it", and are much less likely to bite.

If you feel you need let the little guy know that beaking was too hard, try a very soft, non-threatening voice...place the tip of your finger on the end of his beak slowly and gently, and tell him "gentle beak". Most P'lets get the idea of this very quickly because you are in fact showing him what a gentle beak means...and doing so in such a way that you are not loud (encouraging), or scary/threatening (which may lead to defencive biting).

Also, "playing" to induce biting, (like having a dog tug or pull on your arm in his mouth) is something you might not want to encourage. In most respects you want to avoid biting (by not encouraging it, as well as heeding body language and warnings before the bite). Biting is really a last resort for a bird. You'd be much better off to substitute the "play hand" for biting on or chewing on with a small, hand-held toy. That way you two can have fun, but not get into a situation where biting is encouraged.

Again, a little leeway here if your little man is still young...babies explore with their beaks, and that includes things like dermatology on skin to see what the heck that is, or how sturdy is this perch/hand thing, etc.

    Hope that answers you questions.

OH MY! Blessed by a KIWI with wings???? I am SO honored!
You are a rare bird indeed, and your generous kindness is much appreciated!

In answer to your query about avocado...
The plant derived toxic compound in question is called "persin". The leaves, fruit and pits of the avocado plant contain this substance, and the ASPCA recommends that no pet should be given avocado, (including dogs and cats).
Some people dispute this, saying that you would have to feed an enormous quantity to have effect...HOWEVER, birds are very much lighter in weight than mammals, so even small quantities can be dangerous for them.

Many thanks and MWAH! for your visit :)

This is great! Really nice job and excellent information. I had at parrotlet once--a gray-cheeked parrot(let)--a bit bigger than a parakeet. His name was MacIntosh, because he was very fond of those types of apples (no seeds!). And, yes, he certainly could cop an attitude. Generally, though, he was a good buddy and fun to hang out with. He used to love to pick my teeth, so who needed dental floss? Anyhow, I really like your lens, and the photos are great!
