Symmetrical designs are very formal. They look almost equal in both sides of a particular axis. Humans are attracted towards patterns and order. So, designing a landscape with perfect symmetry and geometry will have a huge impact on the human mind. Asymmetrical designs are informal, and they are loved by artists. Beauty in irregularity also has a huge impact. The designer should be very creative, in order to create asymmetrical landscape designs.

While designing for landscape, one should have an idea about the focus of the project and how to make it more attractive. A fountain, or the entire house structure, can be focal points. All other things should be placed in position as if they point toward these focal points .The climate of the region and the soil should be properly studied before deciding the materials that are to be used.

The living components of the backyard, for example plants, trees and grass, should be selected properly. The colors of the flowers play a huge role. It is advisable to place lighter shades in the foreground and darker shades in the background.

The non-living components of the backyard including the pavement materials, sheds, rocks, and water bodies are very important as well.

Maintenance is key in maintaining a beautiful landscape. Grass and plants should be regularly cut and watered, rocks and other features cleaned, and , of course, your beautiful surroundings should be enjoyed to the max!

Natural landscaping involves landscaping without causing disturbances to the environment. Most landscapers don't follow this method, as they feel beauty, alone, is the function of landscape design. However, efficient landscaping has a huge advantage over its aesthetic counter-parts.

In order to avoid the disturbances caused to our environment and to maintain the delicate harmony of our natural setting, we can plant native trees and plants in our backyards. Edible landscaping, by definition, is the growing of plants that can give us vegetables and fruits that we consume in our daily life. In this era of global warming, climate change, and increased pressure on natural balance, it is better to use natural landscaping techniques.
