Nature and design

Pantai Kemasik, Terengganu

Pantai Kemasik,Kerteh,Terengganu,Malaysia

Look at nature around us, we can see that the concept of recreating and reshaping natural surrounding is as old as human kind's written history, and may be goes back even before we know how to write.

Let's look and look farther into the horizon, you will realise that the landscape design has existed a long long time ago.

It is only recently that the way of decorating our environment with plants and material has been renamed as Landscape Design or another name as Landscape Architecture.

In its simplest word, gardening!Yes, that garden in your front or backyard. It seems that everybody knows what gardening is.

Now, if you look at the design of landscape today, it is so diversed that no style or design could be claimed as its own.

Beautifull landscape wheter it is of soft landscape or hard landscape, or both combined are actually pieces of designs taken from various places and eras, formal and informal characters that shows the unique DNA of the designer.

Let me show you examples.

How about Kublai Khan? What on earth is Kublai Khan got to do with landscaping ideas?

Let us go back thousand of  years ago. It was recorded by Marco Polo several centuries ago that there was an amazing garden at Xanadu ( that Kublai Khan home town) "fully sixteen miles of park land well watered with springs and streams and diversified with lawns."

Then, there was this classical French garden with its formal lines and tidily trimmed shrubery, created during the reign of Louis XIV.

5 years in the making(to be blunt, it's actually my compilations), this whole volume of landscaping ideas, landscaping pictures and gardening present  and highlight landscaping aspects of man made landscape combine with variety of plants such as shrubs, treees and ground covers.

With that rambling, I would like to present you with this delightfull collection and compilation (I hope so! If it is not, tell me so and why, you could even comment, leave your remarks be it about pictures quality, grammatical error, photography tecniques, anything, ask question, just tell me.

Enjoy this landscaping ideas!

Check out this tips on how to be succesful in designing your own landscape

Each of the following steps plays and equally important role in succesfully designing your landscape:

1. Identify your dream landscape
List every feature you want, no matter how frivilous it seems.

2. Establish a budget
This will determine whether you need to scale back and plan to do some work yourself.

3. Determine your style
What are your tastes? What makes sense for your property?

4. Understand the element of design
Proportion, light, colour, mass and texture are the key concept

5. Develop a concept
Now that you know what you want, you can start to make it a reality.

6. Start planning
Take photographs, make notes, and draw sketches to commit your ideas to paper.

Landscaping Using Palm Trees

How to Plant a Palm Tree

It is nice to have palm tree within house yard or anywhere around your home. Palm tree is easy to maintain and it gives good shade if you plan it by following certain ways.

Palm gives a tropical atmosphere that unlike other tree can provide. Unlike landscaping using other trees, landscaping using palm trees have many advantages. The long and slender trunk plus a small canopy spread makes palm an ideal choice of tree to have inside your house yard. Put emphasize at the beginning of planting so that it will grow succesfully.

How to prepare and choose location
There are several factors to be considered when you are going to plant a palm. One of the important aspect is the size of the palm when it grows old or reaches its maturity.

Some palms are very small in nature and some can grow very tall when they grow old.Palms like Raphis humilis is very small, the maximum height when matures is around 100mm, while coconut tree(Cocos nucifera) and Betle nut palm or (Areca catechu) can grow up to very tall height around 90 feet.

Also don't forget to consider how the palm will accommodate itself in the landscape in years to come say 10 or 15 years hence when it reaches maturity.

A big numbers of palms have quite a large canopy spread diameter. Palms planted near to the overhead utility cables can pose danger as its canopy getting bigger and the frond get longer. So, think and plan well.

Also take into consideration where the underground cables and irrigation lines are located. In term of specfication the things that you have to put into consideration prior to planting are:-
1. Overall height(O.H) when reaches its maturity
2. Trunk diameter - avoid planting too close to any object
3. Trunk height - lenght at the beginning of the trunk to the lowest frond

Here are general rules that I find best when it come to plant a palm:

1. Small house yard with 1 storey houses will look exceptionally beautiful without looking overcrowded if you choose medium size to smaller palms. Example of small palms are Manila palm (Veitchia merilli) and Sago palm(Cycas revoluta) Medium size palms are Foxtail palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) and Cane palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens)

2. For residential with large open areas , large and tall palms such as Royals, Cabbage, Cocos, Alexanders and Silvers will add an exclusivity look to your home. For your information and to make it easy for you to purchase at your local nursery outlets below are botanical names for the above mentioned palms:

i. Royal - Roystonea regia
ii. Cabbage - Roystonea oleracea
iii.Coco - Cocos nucifera
iv. Alexander - Archontophoenix alexandrae
v. Silver - Bismarckia nobilis

Planting arrangement
There are 3 types of planting arrangement for landcaping using palm trees.
i. Linear
ii.Cluster
iii. Zig-zag

Palm trees

Roystonea oleracea (Cabbage palm)

Roystonea regia is a spesies of palm which is beautiful to be planted.

This palm are famously planted along avenues, path way or in large gardens. The palm is native to the Carribean and its achieve maturity height at about 25 metres tall.

This palm needs full sun light and moderately high percentage of humidity making it most suitable to be planted in tropical zones.

It is also known as the Cabbage palm. It has a larger diameter at the base of the palm and goes smaller as the height increases.

Here the palm are planted along the pathway straight to the horizon.

Traveller's palm unique form

The traveler's palm or Ravenala madagascariensis is considered to be one of nature's most spectacular trees, weird and exceptionally a beautiful palm.

The traveler's palm (not a true palm) is said being half banana tree and half palm tree. Its long and multiple petioles (stems) and deep green leaves resemble those of the banana and extend distinctively out from the trunk like large slats of a hand fan.

The traveler's palm should be planted within space or areas that can accommodate its large head of leaves.

So, if you wish to have a nice traveler's palm in your house yard make sure the palm gets enough space to grow and take into consideration the orientation of the fan shaped leaves or fronds.

I would like to remind too, hoping this palm would bear banana fruit is a wishful thinking!just joking :-)

Prior to planting you should plan to shelter the palm from strong winds, because the leaves will become tattered if left without protection.

Wood bench

Outdoor wood bench

Wood is a fine material to be used as a garden bench. Wood garden bench looks totally beautiful and it blends well with the natural plants or elements in the gardens. If you plan to accommodate bench in your garden, choose wood garden bench.

Wooden bench also act as wonderful element in your garden because it has insulating properties. Wooden materials also warm up quickly under the sunlight and stays moderately cool when surrounding temperature drop thus making it suitable to sit on.

It is also most suitable to be used as garden bench especially in temperate climate.

There are treated and untreated type of wood bench. The treated wood is most suitable to be used as an outdoor wood bench as it will last longer particularly in areas of high rainfall rate.

Treated wood that has been pressure-treated with chemical or bio-natural preservative also more durable in damp and shady places such as under the trees or pergolas which is densely covered by creeper plant on top of it.

Woods or hardwoods which are sourced from temperate climate such as oak are more durable and resistive to rot than pine which is categorized as softwood. If you intend to build your own outdoor garden bench, another type of wood that have rot resistant properties is Western Red Cedar. This is another alternative than using woods which has been treated by chemical because it contains resin that resist rot.

A rustic wood bench is nice to look at it blends magnificently with natural plants or trees in parks or in your backyard garden. Reclaimed wood or used wood that you choose to be reused as outdoor wood bench also provide a cheaper alternative and has a ready-aged properties.

If you want a quick rustic looking outdoor bench, go for this type of wood. Now you don't have to wait couple of years for the wood to look aged :)

An outdoor wood bench looks gentle and nice especially if you build it without paint, varnish, stain or any other decorative finishing. If you want to build a wood garden bench that looks alive, unobtrusive finish and shows minute grain of patterns then go for this type of wood bench. Make sure you choose woods that has been treated. The beauty will become more apparent with age.

Here you can see wood bench is made of cengal, a tough tropical hardwood, resistant to wet and humid condition.

The stand are made of concrete with decorative pebbles finish. Requires no or little maintenance over the years.

Bamboo fences

Bamboo privacy fence

Bamboo has been known long time ago to serve many purposes to human kind. In many cultures bamboo serves as food, tools, handicraft items, ornamentals, lighting fixtures, writing medium, arm and the list goes on.

The bamboo plant is actually belong to the grass family or in botanical name known as Gramineae. They can grow well in areas of full sun light or partially shady areas.

In landscaping and gardening like the picture shown, bamboos are planted along the metal fences. This is to soften the hard lines projected by the metal fences behind.

Bamboo tree size ranging from dwarf like type to the large and very tall. The large varietes are not suitable to be planted in small garden or within house compound since they have droppy leaves and will become intrusive.

The large species are such as Bambusa vulgaris and Dendrocalamus giganteus. The latter is big bamboo which can grows up to 35 metres and 35cm in diameters.

Then there are small species of bamboos suitable to be planted within house yard or inside your home. These almost dwarf like siblings of bamboos are beautiful and small enough to be planted in pots.

These dwarf plant are such as Bambusa multiplex "Stripestream Fernleaf" and Bambusa multiplex "Tiny Fern".

Here we can see Thyrsostachis siamensis bamboo and the Bucida buceras(spiny olive tree as the common name) planted along the fences.

FRUIT & FRUIT TREES

Dragon Fruit

When I planted the dragon fruit, I will make sure the soil type is sandy naturally, about 70% soil and 30 % sand. I think the dragon love dry and sandy soil:-)
Choose soil where the water is easy to be absorbed by the earth and make sure no retention of water beneath the place where you plant the tree. Too much water and the rooting system will rot.
Once in a while, 4 to 5 month interval ,you should cut the tip of the dragon fruit so the new ones regrow. Not all branches but selectively (50% or so). Leave the old one as this will bear the fruit.

Don't forget to fertilize the dragon tree every 2 weeks, organic fertilizer is the best. (They need nutrition too, like us :-))

I use T-shaped wood supporter to make sure they grow well. Height about 7 feet, with horizontal supporter should be 3 and a half feet, 3" x 3" size wood supporter. You can also use reinforced concrete supporter with the same size as woods but wood looks best (in your yard garden)
And the most happy part is when the dragon fruit ripes, it taste sweet. Mine is purple in colour. The sweetness is on par with the dragon fruit that I buy.

Wall and Fences

Wall

Function of Wall

1. Wall define the areas or boundaries of the land.

2. Walls wheter internal or external serve as shelter and give privacy to the owner of the land.

3. Wall also act as barriers or buffers to noise, vehicle emission, smoke, wind blow and dust.

4. Wall is also used to support climbing and creeper plants.

Type of walls

1. Cast concrete

a. Various shape and skin texturecan be made by these type of wall.

b. Finishes and patterns created depend on the 'formwork'that contains it during the setting up process.

c. Another way of making pattern or finishing of the wall is by using mechanical tool such as

power drill, carver and sand blaster.

2. Concrete block

a. The come in various sizes from small to the big block of concrete and the texture of the skin can be rough with large pores and large sand granules or fine surface with tiny micro pores and small sand particles.

b. The rough skin texture of the concrete block gives off an illusion of receding view of the wall.

c. You can also change dull or old looking wall into vibrant and lively stucture by using spray texture or splatter pain finish

3. Brick
Brick is a tough, long lasting and have strong resistant to the weathering agent. That is why brick is widely use as walling materials.

4. Natural Stone

Natural stones is something that forms by itself. In other word it is made from the process of the earth thousands, tents of thousands to millions of years ago. You can find natural stone being used in different application of decorating the wall.

Natural stone by itself is formless. The are mined in quarry and then transported to the factory where it began to have its shape. Two commonshapes of natural stone are block and slate. Another thing related to natural stone is not all natural stones share the same hardness.

There are soft sedimentary rocks like sandstone or slate. The other is hard stone like igneous. These igneous stones type are grits, flints and granite. Let us go into the prices of natural stones. The price will become more expensive the farther it travels out from the place it is
being quarried.

Other factor that influence the price of natural stone is the way it is being shaped. The more beautiful the pattern and the more uniquely the stone is dressed, the more expensive the price it has. Now let us go to the types of stones available or commonly used.

4.1 Dressed stone
Try to take alook at historical buildings that uses natural stone and will find out that they look so superb, majestic and sturdy structure. The construction must have been made by very crafted and skilled person so it will last hundreds of years.

4.2 Knapped flint

Knapped flint are stones that has different irregular shapes. It is installed to the wall by setting it in the mortar. For example, this type of stone are laid as complex or irregular patterns in ways that the mortar is hidden beneath or between the flint stones.
This produces a beautiful pattern but time consuming craft work justify the high price charged by the skilled crafter.

Books on Building Stone Walls Review at Ebay

Paper back book by John Vivian

Compact and concise, John Vivian's "Building Stone Walls" is a book that you can take with you while collecting (or buying) stone for your project, preparing the location, and building your wall. It offers a good overview of stacking stone, as well as a couple of less common ways of using stone (re-channeling moving water, for example). Best of all, it has some very practical, timesaving tips, particularly advice about when it is necessary to start with a trench and gravel base and when it is not.
- Review by Matthew Spady ,Amazon nickname :800rsd(New York)

Building Stone Walls, as a book, works very well. The writing, typography, design, and illustration all support one another like well-chosen stones, and the result is pleasing: a simple, wonderful book. Even if you have no plans to build a stone wall, the book is worth reading because you can't help but share the author's enthusiasm as he describes the permanence of stone walls, talks about different kinds of stone, discusses tools and techniques, explains footings and drainage, provides advice for working with not-so-good stone, and shares myriad other pearls of wisdom. And, if you are planning on building a stone wall, or just have a fondness for stone, then by all means add this book to your library.

Parana paniculata are small grown cover type of shrub with love shaped leaves. The plants only need small amount of sunlight making it most suitable to be planted in shady areas such as under the trellis, porch, beside windows at home and other shady places.

Here the plant grows well under the heavy shaded trellis. You can see that the planter wall of light to dark brownish coloured granite goes well with the plant.

I wanted to throw out there that there are a lot of places around the country that are experiencing tough water restrictions. It's really limited the types of landscaping you CAN put in. We've had a lot of success with artificial palm trees. They require no watering or maintenance, and give you that tropical look anywhere in the country without worrying about keeping them alive in a hot or cold climate.

Great info!

Landscaping with palms

Here the landscape designer use Livistonia Chinensis as planting on the island.

The planting arrangement is typical that is linear planting.

Livistonia Palm at Junction

In the picture, Livistonias, 5 of them are planted in zig-zag or triangular patterns.

A zoom out pictures of Livistonia palm trees

Livistonia palm planting plans

The group of palms are planted at the corner of the junction.
Here, the landscape architect uses Livistonia chinensis as the chosen species.

Note that there are 3 different height of the palms. Tallest, short and medium height. The palm plans will explain the planting arrangement by itself.

The Livistonias leaves are fan-shaped or in landscaping term are called as "palmate".
Feather-shaped leaves or "pinnate" are palm such as betel nut palm and coconut.
