Jackfruit - Strange-looking Fruit of the Asian Tropics

The Jackfruit - Spiny Tropical Relative of the Breadfruit!

If you are walking around in the Philippines, India, Australia, or many of the Pacific tropical islands such as Guam, Palau, or Hawaii, you may find a tree sporting an interestingly huge fruit--the Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), also known in the Philippines as "Langka".
This fruit can be larger than a basketball (and larger than its cousin, the Breadfruit). The innards of the fruit are different from its cousin as well. The innards of a jackfruit are segmented, sweet, and mildly resemble citrus fruit. Sometimes this fruit can also be mistaken for another of its cousins, the stinky Durian. You can sometimes find Durian at Oriental Markets in the U.S. and elsewhere.

This Squidoo lens is an attempt to provide more information about this interesting fruit. The pictures were taken during a recent trip to the Philippines.

Big Fruit with a Big Flavor!

They have an odor that takes a while to get used to, however!

Jackfruit (Langka) for sale at a Chinatown Street Market, San Francisco, CaliforniaThe jackfruit is assumed to have originated near the foot of India's Western Ghat mountains.

What's most unusual about the fruit is how huge it is--it's considered to be the largest edible tree-borne fruit. It's so big that you won't find it growing on the outer branches of a tree--it grows more on the thick bases of the biggest branches and even off the trunks of its tree.

When I first encountered jackfruit on the Western Pacific island of Guam, the odor was something that needed getting used to (however, it's not quite as bad as the odor of a durian!). But the bright orangish-yellow "arils" (the flesh around the seeds), have a sweet, citrussy (?) flavor, but at the same time are sort of rubbery--they taste like a fruity form of Squid sushi! You'll see them (or maybe just taste them) in fruit salads, desserts, milk drinks, ice cream, and even in soups and main dishes. (I like to eat them fresh from the just-cut fruit or straight from the can or jar... no need to fool around with "preparing" them!) But the preparation for the arils also includes drying them, freezing them, or preserving them in syrup.
