A Must Visit Island - Langkawi

I want to share my experience going to Langkawi Island with my friends. You can also take it as a tour guide to Langkawi. Who knows? Maybe you want to come experience it yourself. You are always welcome to use my experience. I'll also put some tip about Langkawi. This is the story of me, Mol, Peace-Smart, Rangga, Te-Pol, Peja, WajiDun, Wawa going to Langkawi Island.

A Nice Day for a Trip

The Island

The island is located to the north of Malaysia in the Malacca Straits. It is very near to the border of Thailand. It has been around for many years and since the 90's, the island has become an attraction to tourists from all over the world.

For your information, it is a duty-free island. That is why some Malaysians called it shopping spree Langkawi especially when it comes to candies.

Departing

How to get there?

The island is located in Malaysia. So if you are from other countries, you have to visit Malaysia first. Its worth it :)

We went there in the last semester break by plane with . There are several methods to reach there. You can drive to the north to Kedah where the island is located and then take a ferry to Langkawi.

But we prefer by flight because it would take half a day just to drive to the north from Kuala Lumpur not to mention the toll and the fuel cost. So we just took an Aero-Bus (a coach bus taking you back and forth) from to Low Cost carriage Terminal which just cost about RM9 and took a 45-minutes flight. Of course you have to book early online. Watch out for promotions. When we booked our tickets online, our tickets cost only RM 15 ( yupp, it does not include the surcharge and etc=the total for return tickets were RM 135.69. Nice right?).But if we booked the week previously, the price were cheaper --> RM 5 ONLY...but we missed it. So watch out for the promotions.

You also can take a ferry from Thailand but I have no information regarding this. Sorry.

Welcome to Langkawi A Duty-Free Island

Book AirAsia tickets in advance (a month or two) - you can get very cheap deals and offers. Watch out for them!!

Transportation in Langkawi

When we arrived at the airport, we rent two cars to accommodate 8 of us. Besides, with cars we can go anywhere around the island easily. There are some other choices:

1. Just take the cab. There two kind of cabs which is the normal car cab and also the van-liked cab (if you are traveling with your family). The rates are suitable and they are available almost everywhere on the island

2. Rent a car. You can choose which car you want to rent either big or small cars. But it does not cost you cheap. The bigger they are, the more you have to pay for it. The rent is counted on daily basis. We shared the rent altogether RM 80 per day for 1 car. So it just cost us RM 20 per day each for transportation. Yes, you have to fuel up the tank also. And they are all right-hand drive.

3. Rent a bicycle or a scooter. We found some shops who provides them at RM 25 per day for the scooter and RM 15 (if I'm not mistaken) for the bicycle. But I definitely does not encourage you all to use this method.

"All Malaysian cars are right-hand drive"

Accommodations and Hotels

We stayed at the located south of the island and about 15 minutes from the airport. The place is great and it's a 4-star hotel I think. It has all the basic need like swimming pool, room service, laundry service café and etc.

On the island, there are lots of hotels from 1-star to 5-star hotel to choose from. We choose this one because it is near to the beach, lots of cool restaurants and cafes (western, eastern and local food) along the way to the hotel and you can reach there by 2 minutes walking.

It is also near to the Island Hopping jetty. (I'll talk about it after this) and near to the Langkawi Underwater World.

Food and Beverages

The first day, we just walked about two minutes from the hotel and make up our mind (there are a lot of cafes and restaurants around) and each of them has their own specialty. Some provide western foods, some have Chinese cuisines, Arab foods and not to mention local foods of course.

It is better to eat there compared to the restaurants in the city or nearby town for dinner. Where is the fun if you had dinner in the town? This is the time to enjoy seafood with fresh fish and prawns that you can choose yourself. Yes, you can choose which fish or seafood to be cooked. Highly recommended. Don't forget to order Lauk Tiga Rasa and TomYum Campur. Yummy!!

Plan wisely, all the prices will be doubled during PEAK SEASONS like school holidays (May,August,November and December)including rents & accommodations

Island Hopping-A Must!!

Half day trip around the island

The second day, we went for Island Hopping. It is a trip to islands around Langkawi on a boat. It includes a trip to the Dayang Bunting Island, eagle feeding area and Beras Basah Island. You can get information through the reception counter at your hotels and they will give you a contact number of the person in charge. We were charged RM35 each. It is best to book early (we booked it on the first day) so that they can arrange the boats and they will pick you from your hotel and bring you to the jetty. Don't worry, after that they will send you back to the hotel. They took us from the hotel at 8am in the morning. Arriving at the jetty, there were other tourists like us and the boat is waiting. We ride on and away we go.

The first island was Dayang Bunting Island. This is where you can drop off and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. We arrive at the jetty and the boat driver gave us about 1 hour on the island. We walked through the forest and come across a beautiful lake. Some of the tourists put their legs in the water and fishes swam around them. Pretty cool. You can swim in the lake. My friends rent a paddle boat while others went for a swim. They also have a booth if you like to rent a float jacket or buy snacks. But beware of the monkeys. My friends' cookie was grabbed by one of them. So don't show around your snacks. They will snatch your bags also. To them, plastics and begs means there are food. We also took pictures and have fun with the monkey.
After one hour as promised, we went back to the jetty to our boat.

Dayang Bunting Island

A must when you go Island Hopping

1. Bring along a bathing suit. You'll need it for swimming at the lake and the sea
2. Bring your own drinks and snacks. It will cost you double the price if you buy it in the journey
3. Beware of monkeys. Keep a watch out for your bags and clothes
4. Bring a camera. Or you will regret it!! :)

Feed your Feet to the Fish?

The monkey that stole our biscuits!!

The trip took us to a place where there were many eagles flying and watch them feed. Eagle Feeding they called it. Most of the birds were at least 1 meter wide and some of them were very big. We spend about 15 minutes there. Its a spectacular site.

Just imagine having those birds around you like you will be their next target. :)

The end of the trip was the Beras Basah Island (Wet Rice Island). I didn't know why the name was actually like that. But I do know that the sand was very white and the sea was clear enough we can see small fishes swam around us. You also have to watch your bags here and beware of monkeys again. You can enjoy the sea; take a parachute ride (it will cost you) and kayaking.

We spend the time here to swim around, taking pictures and making sure our bags does not stolen by the monkeys. By the time we finished swimming, it was noon already. The trip ended there where the boat took us to the jetty and sent us back to our hotel.

Langkawi Cable Car

Later that evening, we went to the Langkawi Geopark where the was located. The cable car will bring you to highest peak in Langkawi Island and from there you can see the whole island without a doubt. There are also some souvenir shops and food outlets. The ticket for the cable car was RM 15 (if I'm not mistaken but it didn't cost much and worth the experience). The ride took us about 20 minutes to reach the top and it was so high that we were afraid to look down.

From the top station which was 710m from sea level, you can actually see the whole island. We even saw which part of the island that is raining at that time. There were cool breezes in the air and we also walk through the Sky Bridge. As you can see in one of the pictures where it was some sort of a triangle-shaped platform.

- Up in the Sky -

That's a Nice Spot

Here, you can feel as the wind blew right through you and the bridge was actually moving! But the view was amazing and cannot be described through mere words. We rest here for a while and took some pictures. The view was tremendous. It feels like flying! For those who have phobia of heights, better get rid of it. You'll miss the chance of your life to experience this :)

After we got back to the ground, we stopped by the Geopark and headed towards the animal farm. There were rabbits, deers, parrots and horses to play with. Be with the nature and you can feed them as well.

Can you find the monkeys?

Telaga Tujuh Waterfall

aka the Seven Wells Waterfall

From the Cable Car, we saw a waterfall near the area and decided to have a look. About 5 minutes from the Langkawi Geopark, we arrived at the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall (Seven Well Waterfall). We parked our car and walked about 10 minutes through the pathway and arrived at the waterfall. I think the waterfall was at least 5-storey high and the zephyr was the best.

The river was cold and I regret didn't bring any wet clothes with me. What else? I went into the river with my pants on because I just cannot stand there and let the feel and the experience went away. It was one of the best waterfalls that I've visited in my life. It feels great leaving the place with a wonderful experience.

Path of Nature

Underwater World Langkawi

The next day, we went to the Underwater World Langkawi. It is quite near to our hotel. The place open at 9.30am and there were penguins at that time. Unique to Underwater World Langkawi is the gigantic 15-meter long walk-through tunnel consisting of 500,000 liter seawater which houses many big fishes and sea creatures including the Giant Green Turtle. My friends told me that there was a pond where you can touch and hold starfishes but I didn't see it at that time :(

There are also Freshwater Fish Section, the Seashell Display, the Koi Pond, the Mini Reptilian and Invertebrate Section, the Coral Reef Section and the Poisonous and Venomous Creatures Section.

Shopping

After that we drive through the island for shopping!!. If you want to buy candies and culinary items, I recommend Bandar Kuah (Kuah Town) or the Jetty Sentral. They have lots of items to shop from lingerie to culinary. You can also watch movies at the Langkawi Mall or play bowling at the Jetty Sentral.

If you want buy some souvenirs and clothing, I recommend you to go to Padang Matsirat and ask the local people where is Beras Terbakar. There is a bazaar of souvenirs and clothes with a very cheap price. You can find them at Kuah Town also but it will be relatively more expensive. We bought candies, t-shirts, culinary sets and even knife sets

After shopping, we just drove around the island and headed back to the airport. Return the cars and check-in for our flight.

While waiting for our flight, suddenly my friend Te-Pol noticed a local Malaysian artist Watie Elite was there on the same flight and we asked her if we could take a picture together. She said yes. This is nice. She was actually just finished shooting for a film. It will be shown in October. Another memory on the island

That's our journey and maybe you can visit the island after this. Send me a squidcard. So what are you waiting for? Go and book a flight right away. Bye:)
