High performance delivered on a budget
The 1 Series may be the smallest and least expesnive Bimmer in the lineup, but dont be fooled by its "entry level" position.
BMW has long enjoyed a reputation for building "drivers cars" and in the 1 Series they haven't strayed from that mandate. These sports coupes have been available in Europe since 2004 and have doing big numbers. In Canada, where "luxury compacts" are a harder sell, the 1 Series starting approximately $8,500 to $10,400 cheaper than its 3 Series siblings, the company should see a lot more buyers coming to its iconic marque.
In Canada, buyers can choose from two very capable models, with the 128i powered by a normally aspirated 3.0 litre inline six and the 135i getting a twin-turbo version of the 3.0 litre six, along with enhanced styling, suspension and brakes.
Both share a 2+2 configuration that features a muscular body with short overhangs, protruding wheel arches over 17 inch or 18-inch alloys, an aggressive shoulder line and long engine compartment. There's a sporty trunk-lid spoiler in the rear.
The look is long and low, but the 1 series is nearly 10 inches shorter than the 3 series Coupe. Still, it only gives up 4 inches in wheelbase and just over an inch in width, and is actually just over an inch taller.
Rear seat leg room is slightly more cramped, but if your regularly carry rear passengers, go for four doors and buy the 3 series sedan. It also gives you a bigger trunk at 450 litres as opposed to 370.
But the joy of driving the 1 Series - not to mention the money savings- far outweighs any small sacrifice in space. Especially if like me, you're alone in the vehicle most of the time.

BMW's blue propeller homage to aircraft roots
The circular blue and white BMW logo was designed to look like a spinning aircraft propeller, which pays homage to the company's beginnings manufacturing aircraft engines.
In 1998, Honda was the first to introduce a fully mechanical active four-wheel steering system in a production car with its Prelude, a technology the Japanese automaker was convinced would be the next big thing.
With four-wheel steering, the Prelude turning radius was tighter and parking maneuvers could supposedly be done more efficiently. It was also said to make the Prelude more stable at high speeds. At low speeds, the back wheels turned in the opposite direction of the front wheels for tight manoeuvrings. At high speeds, all four wheels would turn the same way within a few degrees, which was supposed to enhance stability. the movement was all based on the degree of steering input, where, in most situations, a lot of steering was needed in low-speed driving and little steering was anticipated while driving at higher speeds.
Active four-wheel steering never really caught on because Honda's system was too complex and heavy and the improvements over traditional steering were negligible.
Today, monster trucks are pretty much the only vehicles that use the technology to its fullest. Honda probably thought four-wheel steering would catch on in crowded cities such as Tokyo where parking spots are tiny and few and far between.
But Honda's idea wasn't totally crazy. Other automakers that offered four-wheel steering in some form include Mazda, BMW, GMC, Nissan, Infiniti, Mitsubishi and Toyota. Cars from these automakers that used four-wheel steering were generally more performance-oriented, with the exception of GMC, which used the technology on its full-sized pickup trucks.
