Rosetta Stone Language Products
There is no more popular option on the market than the Rosetta Stone Products. These products offer really nice videos which you can use to learn a wide variety of languages, but they're pricey at about $500 for each language you want to learn.
This is a decent option, but like most language classes you've taken at school, you spend a lot of time in the Rosetta Stone courses learning useless stuff. When exactly will you ever need to ask someone about farm animals in a different language? Never? I thought so.
What we like about the Rocket language courses is that they focus on conversational language. While you might struggle with reading classic literature in your new language, at least you'll be able to interpret what people are saying to you!
The practical approach to learning language is really the only way to go about it, and nobody does that better than the Rocket Company. They currently have courses available in Spanish, German, French, Japanese and American Sign language.

Language and Travel
Whenever you go on a trip, it's important to learn a tiny bit of the language before you go. Those French-English dictionaries are a nice thing to have, but if you can't understand what someone says to you, then you're in big trouble.
If you get lost, you might be left behind by a cruise ship, and if you accidentally order the wrong food in the restaurant, you could spend a day or two visiting the local hospital...not exactly a tourist attraction if you get what I'm saying.
As such, it is very important when planning a trip abroad to learn the basics of the language spoken in that country in case of emergency. The basics can be obtained through a variety of audio courses or through an introductory course you can download on your computer. With the basics of conversational language down pat, then you're probably safe and you'll have a much nicer vacation abroad.
