Lantau Island, Site of Hong Kong's New Airport and More!

Ranked #5,478 in Travel & Places, #156,538 overall

There's More to Lantau Island than Just Hong Kong's New International Airport!

If you are going to be visiting Hong Kong and arriving by air, you will be landing at the new Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on Lantau Island. The airport, also known as Chek Lap Kok Airport has been established on reclaimed land (landfill and build-up to provide firm ground for the airport facilities).

The island now has access to the mainland (and Kowloon) and Hong Kong by a modern express train and by freeway toll road.

Later, after spending time exploring Hong Kong and Kowloon, however, you may want to return to Lantau Island to discover some of its other attractions. For this excursion, you can take one of the TurboCats (Fast Catamaran Ferries) from the Piers at Hong Kong's Central Discrict.

This Squidoo lens describes some of the attractions you can find on Lantau Island.

Well, the First Time You Get to Lantau Island Is By Air. But the Second Time Can Be By Sea!

Side View of the First Ferry JetCat Catamaran at Hong Kong's Central PierWhen your Star Ferry from Kowloon arrives at the Central Pier on Hong Kong Island, if you look over to your right, you'll see the "First Ferry" Pier. To get to Lantau Island, just walk over to that Pier, pay for a token, and then when they announce the boarding, get on board the fast orange, white, and green TurboJet/TurboCat catamaran for a short 40-minute ride to the village of Mui Wo on the south side of Lantau Island. (The airport is on the north side.)

The Bus Ride From Mui Wo to the Giant Buddha is a Trip Itself!

View of the Road for the Bus Ride From Mui Wo to the Giant BuddhaFirst, on Lantau, as in Hong Kong and Kowloon, they follow the U.K. method of driving on the left side of the road. So that makes for a weird experience.

Second, the roads on Lantau are narrow without shoulders. So it's not uncommon to have foilage brushing against the bus as it whizzes along the road.

Third, it seems that many of the public transportation drivers are ex-Indie 500 drivers... they are pretty nimble with whizzing around the curves and through the villages along the way!

Getting Ready to Go Up the Stairs to the Base of the Buddha?

Getting Ready to Go Up the Stairs to the Base of the Buddha? After we got off the bus at the Po Lin Temple and Monastery, some wanted to hike up the stairs to the Giant Buddha. I opted to explore the more level grounds (with fewer stairs). The views are outstanding anyway.

Clustered around the bus station are small gift shops set up under tent-like awnings. The grounds also have a vegetarian-only cafeteria, a tea garden, and other facilities in addition to the dormitories and temple buildings.

It's fun to explore the ornately carved temple buildings while being wafted by the fragrant scent of the many incense burners scattered around the grounds.

Po Lin Monastery
Home of one of the largest Buddhas in the world, the Po Lin Monastery is a beautiful attraction you can easily see on Lantau Island. We went there by way of a ferry from Hong Kong Island to the town of Mui Wo on Lantau Island.
