Keeping your cool with a laptop cooling pad

Choosing a laptop cooling pad

Those of us who sit back in comfy chairs, laptop open and resting on our laps, typing away, have probably experienced the uncomfortable heat that is generated by even the coolest of laptops but, with the use of a laptop cooling pad, there's no need to be uncomfortable any longer. A good laptop cooling pad will be large enough to cover the entire bottom of your PC or Macbook computer and will generate enough fan breeze that your lap will remain cool.

As a woman of 53, I particularly was interested in staying cool, if you get my drift. So, I've purchase 3 laptop cooling pads in the recent year. I'm a pro at analyzing which ones work and which ones don't. Come along with me and explore the pluses and minuses of a few - including some things I tried with little success.

Homemade laptop cooling pads?

Not so much

Since I'm fairly cheap, I wasn't too crazy about plunking down $25 or so for a real laptop cooling pad so I tried to make my own - with little success. If you're cheap like me and don't believe me that a real laptop cooling pad is well worth the money, read on, dear Cheapskate.
  • 1A coffee table book. This actually will work as a serviceable laptop cooler but it is heavy. And, depending on really how cheap you were when you bought your book, there is the possibility that the ink on the cover will bleed onto your white pants - don't ask me how I know this little known fact.
  • 2A towel. I used a bath towel for a while as a laptop cooling matt and, really, the only thing the towel was good for was wiping away the sweat from my lap. No go on that one.
  • 3A sofa pillow. The sofa pillow actually served as a passable laptop cooling pad except that the added fluff made it difficult to type. And, the laptop wobbled a bit atop the pillow.
  • 4Newspaper. Little did I know that newspaper is actually insulating so this solution was anything but.

Laptop cooling pads for under $20 on Amazon.com.

I purchased my first laptop cooling pad from the Apple store. It was specifically marketed for my Macbook Pro laptop computer but was uncomfortable as it was all plastic and bit into my legs. I also found that it was a bit too small to cover the entire bottom of my laptop computer.

The below are all decent laptop cooling pads and the prices are better than I've found in my local Walmart or Best Buy.

Things to look for in laptop cooling pads

Laptop cooling pads come in many different shapes and sizes. And, the voice of experience is speaking here, take time to invest in figuring out what your needs are before you go spend a bunch of bucks on a laptop cooling mat that doesn't suit your purposes.
  1. Size matters. Make sure that the laptop cooling mat you select covers the entire bottom of your laptop plus some. So, if you have a 17" laptop, I suggest a 19" laptop cooling pad. And, bigger just might be better - a laptop cooling stand can never be too big if you as me.
  2. Look for the number of USB ports in the laptop cooling mat. Depending again on your needs, this may or may not matter to you but I like to have additional USB ports available in my laptop cooling pad. This allows me to charge my phone, download photos from my iPod, and charge my camera at the same time.
  3. The cooshier the bottom of the laptop cooling mat, the better. A still plastic laptop cooling pad may not be as comforable as a fabric covered model. I love the Targus I use as it feel almost like felt and always stays cool on my lap.
  4. Adjustable airflow. Now, here's a quality that's really worth the money. Some laptop cooling pads come with different settings depending on your needs. I love the idea that I can increase the fan speed to add further cooling.

My favorite laptop cooling pad

and the one I use to this day

Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE5504US
(Silver/White Accents)

The Targus oversized lap chill mat is the cream of the crop, if you ask me. One of the problems I've had with other laptop chilling stands is that the power cord (which connects to the laptop itself) was on the side of the cooling pad. This is an integral design flaw as, if you've got the thing on your lap, at some point, you're going to jostle the cord or, like me, bend the cord so that the laptop cooling pad fan works intermittently.

The Targus chill mat has the cord hard wired into the back of the cooling pad. There's no way this cord can be damaged, ever. It's the perfect design.

Does the heat from your laptop drive you crazy?

I hate heat which is going to be a problem one day when we relocate full time to Key West, Florida. But, regardless of my current situation, how you doin'? Please leave me comments.

Thanks for the information! I have been thinking about getting a cooling pad for my wife for Mother's Day. She uses a Macbook and many times uses a sofa pillow to protect her legs. If she likes whichever one I buy, then I may have to buy one for myself, too!

Great stuff here - definitely a good idea to keep your laptop cooler, not good for your lap OR the computer. Blessed by a SquidAngel!

It isn't just your lap that is getting hot, as the interior of the laptop overheats, especially if the vents are blocked by fabric like a towel. My laptop died an untimely death from frying it's little circuits or something.

I am using a pad that has a hard shell table top but is padded on the lap side. It doesn't have a cooling feature, but keeps a fair amount of the heat off my legs. I really like the idea of the cooling pads. If I didn't already have an acceptable option, I would definitely purchase a cooling pad.

That sounds perfect too! I think I'll add a module into this lens about that type of lap desk. Thanks for the great comment and suggestion!
