Selecting a laptop computer

Buyer's Guide

So are you intending to buy a new personal computer? Before you settle for a desktop, consider the current selection of laptops available today. You no longer need to sacrifice performance for the convenience of portability and mobility any more with today's advanced technology!

Because of the advancement of technology today coupled with the ever attractive pricing, laptop computers or sometimes called "Notebook" or even "Lappy", has come quite close and is relatively comparable to their desktop counterparts in terms of performance and power, making it an ideal choice for practically everyone. In addition, the LCD screen technology, power consumption, designs and style have all seen significant improvement over the last couple of years.

Laptop today comes in many flavors, ranging from full-powered versions with the latest processors and largest screens capable of running the highly processor-intensive software to the light-weight colorful designed chic versions, all in less than 3 pounds. There are also other different classes of laptop available today such as the mini laptops (small-sized and light-weight version), and tablet PCs (or Pocket PCs) which combines the computer functions with a touch screen pad, all with the size that can fit into a pocket.

Apart from that, today's laptops carry all the common features of a desktop system. Common features such as support for connectivity standards like USB, Ethernet, FireWire, Wireless networking, Bluetooth and others are all available in today's laptop and if they are not already equipped, they can easily be added on by purchasing an additional external device or easily be upgraded.

Making the right selection

Since laptop today comes in so many flavors and so many brands, how do you choose the right one for your computing needs? The general rule is to first identify what you will do most with the computer you intended to buy. Are you buying primarily as a new system or simply because you want to extend your existing system for the sole reason of added mobility and other functionality? Are you buying for multimedia or gaming purposes? Is the size or the computing power matters to you the most?

Although the price of laptops has come down greatly ever since, laptops still cost more than a desktop system. Prices start from a few hundred dollars and can run into as much as more than $5,000 for a model with the greatest and latest features. Therefore, your budget will next tend to narrow your choices. Many other features affect the price apart from just the processing power and performance. Size and weight can affect the price as well as other features such as security, screen technologies, power-saving functionalities and battery types.

What to look for in a laptop?

Different people have different needs and requirements. For example, if you are buying a laptop to make presentations, then a video-out jack is important to you. It allows you to connect to projector, or large external screen to show your presentations. If you are buying for the purpose of gaming, then you will be looking for a laptop with fast processors, sufficient memory and a decent 3D graphic card. If style is your utmost important requirement, then you will find a classy, colored stylish and design ones appealing.

After identifying your needs and budgeted wisely, then the next step is to find a brand or model that best suit your needs. You might need to survey several brands and models and do some comparisons before you make your final decision to grab one. You need to check the laptop's keyboard, mouse and other user input interface for comfortably as these are what you will be dealing with for most of the time when using the computer. Are they comfortable enough to you? Also, you might need to check the laptop's screen too as many manufacturers make a lot of claims about the contrasts, brightness and the resolutions supported by their screens. Check them out whether they work for you under a range of lighting conditions and the resolutions that you think best suits you.

Do not hesitate to do some research on your own as well, be it from getting ideas from friends or from computer magazines, books or even the Internet as you will be the one who will end up using it for some time after buying one. You will be relying on it for many years to come.

Hope this helps you make a right choice!
