Welcome to my Laptop Insurance Lens

Trying to discuss the thrilling world of insurance, with particular emphasis on Laptop Insurance. I've intersperesed the lens with snippets of my own life to try and make it slightly more interesting than watching paint dry. Laptop Insurance is actually quite cheap now, and, as laptops are more common, it is worth having some kind of laptop insurance cover in place that would specifically cover and subsequently replace your laptop. Think about it, could you be without your laptop computer for weeks one end?

Welcome to Laptop Insurance Central - Protecting your Laptop at ALL times (o:

Laptop Insurance. Meh. Yes I know it is quite boring subject, but I'm going to shed some light on it to try and make it slightly more interesting!

"Yes, well, our laptop is covered by my home insurance" I here you cry!

There are more and more laptops around nowadays now and many people do not realise that their laptops are not covered by traditional, home insurance policies for many of the risks your laptop would face!

And, have you ever tried to claim on your home insurance? It takes ages for the claim to be processed. Let's explore laptop insurance a little bit more...

OK, Let's explore the Home Insurance debate zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (stay with me (o: )

Laptop Insurance vs Home Insurance (that's a picture of me and my wife)

Ok the gloves are off I'm going to debate the issue of home insurance vs laptop insurance, for covering your laptop computer. With home insurance you have the benefit of only having to pay one monthly payment, and your laptop is then covered, along with your other contents. Great. That's it, Home insurance wins the battle!

Well, not quite. How much is the excess on your home insurance policy? If you're anything like me you will have set it quite high to minimise the monthly payments. Mine is £150, so If I did break my lovely, shiny laptop I would have to give the greedy home insurance company £150 of my hard earned cash. And they would have the cheek to push up my home insurance afterwards.

With Laptop Insurance you don't have to think about touching your home insurance and you can leave your home insurance to cover the more expensive things in your life. Like your house falling down or your television exploding.

Ok, I know this is boring, so let's have something else...

Here's my cat. Nothing to do with Laptops or Insurance, but a bit more interesting.

...her name is Huxley (we thought she was a he until the vets couldn't find anything to snip)

How long to Process your Claim

Days, Weeks, Years??

Well years is probably a slight exageration, but I remember when claiming for a tile coming off my roof, it took 3 weeks to get the paperwork sorted through my home insurance company. Could you be 3 weeks without your laptop? I certainly couldn't be without my shiny lappy for more than a day without breaking into a sweat (I have tried therapy for this, but it's not worked).

With Laptop Insurance in place you may find that your laptop is replaced much quicker than the traditional home insurance timescale. You see, quite often , there is no need to fill any lengthy forms in and the process is completed really quickly and without any fuss. Some companies even offer a guaranteed 48 hours replacement service, which is more than the hour I can be without my lappy, but significantly less than 3 weeks (and just enough to stop me having a complete breakdown)

So are you going to bother with Laptop Insurance?

...I would and I would recommend you do to, before you drop your laptop in the bath.

Well, in the bath is probably a little bit extreme, but dropping your laptop in the bath would render it damaged, beyond repair. And if you had it connected to the power mains, the same thing would be said about your health. But heath insurance is another story.

The first thing I would need to ask is, what were you actually doing in the bath with your laptop computer in the first place? Once that had been established, I would then need to ask, was your laptop waterproof?

If you had some form of computer insurance in place, you may have liquid cover protection as standard. Essentially, this means that if you spilt liquids over your laptop (or dropped it in the bath) you would be able to claim for a new laptop and not have to claim, touch, think about, worry about, go near, approach your home insurance policy, who would love to process your claim, in several weeks and charge you £150 for claiming for your bubble bath infested laptop computer.
