Laptop Security
Laptops are a major investment - not so much in cost anymore but more in effort.
If you lost your laptop, how much effort would it take to get back to where you are now?, do you have all your work backed up?, do you know which of your passwords are cached and would need to be changed?, are your bank details anywhere on your laptop?, social security number?
The hardware value of your laptop suddenly pales into insignificance compared to the damage the thief could do with all that information.
There is now a free service for tracking stolen laptops, simply register your device at http://www.qeeqie.com and you will be given a unique URL to use as your web browsers home page. Now every time you open your web browser your internet address is logged in a secure database. If your laptop is ever stolen and used on the Internet you will be able to track it.
Log your Serial Number
Have a quick look at the bottom of your laptop and make a note of the serial number somewhere - not on the laptop.
If you ever need to report it stolen the police are going to want to know this.
While you're at it you may want to do the same for any other mobile devices you have.
Lower your chances of Identity Theft
So that's the ID thieves beaten then? - If only.
With this change in habit ID thieves are looking into other ways of getting hold of your details, one increasingly popular method is by stealing your laptop.
Without any form of tracking only 2 percent of stolen laptops are ever recovered (FBI statistic) - are you certain there's nothing on your laptop that could be used by identity thieves?.
If your laptop is ever stolen you need to get it back as fast as possible.
