Beware of Large Aquarium Fish

Wanting to see your pet grow to a healthy and happy size is common for any pet owner, whether that pet is a dog, cat, hamster, or even fish. Being of a full size is a sign of health for most animals and a pet that doesn't grow properly can be showing signs of sickness. But when it comes to large aquarium fish, there are some things that you're going to want to consider if you want to be that responsible pet owner.

Large Aquarium Fish Need To Be In A Large Tank

First keep in mind that large aquarium fish of course need to be in a large tank. Fish need to swim around in order to breathe and a fish that's too large for the tank it's contained in won't allow it to do that. Think of how you would feel if you were in a tiny jail cell all day with no relief, ever. It's terrifying and unhealthy! And so it is with large aquarium fish that are kept in a tank that is too small for them. They can't move around the way they should and suffer physically and emotionally.

Varieties Of Large Aquarium Fish

Also many varieties of large aquarium fish are what are called "bully" fish. They have no problem using their large size to pick on smaller fish and sometimes even physically attack them, nipping at their fins. This can cause a lot of damage to those smaller fish, both physically and emotionally. When you have large aquarium fish that are considered bully fish with fish that are more shy and demure this is going to cause problems in the tank overall.

Many pet owners are surprised at just how large these large aquarium fish can actually grow. Some are over a foot long, and some get up to seventeen or eighteen inches! You can see what a problem this is for tanks that are only a few feet across as the fish really have no place to swim.

Deciding Whether A Large Aquarium Fish Is For You...

How can you decide whether or not large aquarium fish are right for you and your home tank? Your most important step is to do some research about the particular variety or species you're considering. How big will it possibly grow? Is it considered a bully fish or does it have aggressive tendencies? When you do some basic homework about these varieties of large aquarium fish you can make the best decision for you and for your intended pet.

Remember too the welfare of the other fish that will be in the tank with the large aquarium fish you're selecting. If other fish overwhelm the tank or are competing for food and space, these smaller fish will suffer. While it may be fun and interesting to see just how large these large aquarium fish can grow, it may not be in the best interest of the fish in the tank. Be picky and selective about your choices and do your homework, and you're bound to have a happy and healthy collection of fish overall.
