Large Dog Crates for Big Dogs

Are you looking for a large dog crate? When I got my German Shepherd two years ago she was already crate trained. In fact, Sheba often goes in her crate to sleep during the day while I work. A good large dog crate is one of the more expensive items for new pet owners, but even large breed dogs benefit from having a place where they can curl up and relax. Think of it as your dog's bedroom or safe spot in the house when things get hectic. There are several reasons why dog owners must invest in a dog crate.

The right dog crate is essential for safe travel with a dog. You also need to have one handy in case of emergency weather. Even leaving a puppy at home alone is not advisable without a dog crate to keep him safe from chewing cords or having "accidents" while you are away.

Here we'll focus specifically on large dog crates. I've had the most trouble finding strong large dog crates for my home in the past. They all seem too small or too flimsy to hold my 90lb German Shepherd. I finally found some that do pass the test for housing big dogs, so I thought I would share them with you here. We'll also cover crate training and a few tips and tricks for keeping your large dog crate clean and lasting longer.

What Size Dog Kennel Do I Need?

Large Breed Dog Crate SizingIt's actually fairly easy to find out what size dog crate is right for your pet. It has to be large enough for the dog to turn around in comfortably, and stand up in completely. That's all the room they need. Any more room inside and the dog crate will seem intimidating for the pet and may cause an aversion to going inside. The dog crate acts like a den for the dog, which is a snug fit in the wild and should be in your home as well.

For full instructions on how to size a dog crate check out this lens: Dog Crate Sizing

Large breed puppy owners should invest in a well made cage style kennel that can be adjusted to fit the size of the dog as he grows. The "wall" is usually just a wire panel that can be moved to make the crate seem smaller, with part inaccessible to the dog. This style of crate will save money in the long run since you won't have to invest in a larger crate later.

If you don't have the funds to purchase a large dog crate right now and your puppy is still small, go ahead and get the largest you can afford. Puppy proof your home completely and train your pet so he's ready to face the world without a crate if need be for a while.

MidWest Large Dog Crates

MidWest Life Stages Fold & Carry Double Door Pet Home CrateIt's no secret that MidWest Metal is the go to company for your dog crate and kennel needs. This company has a long history in the business, and though they are higher in price, they are also high in quality. I've found, through years of grooming large dogs, that only Precision Great Crates and MidWest crates truly stand the test of time. MidWest crates are slightly more expensive than Precision, but that may be because they are easier to get access to than other brands. It may also be that more people know and trust in the MidWest name on a dog crate. I highly recommend both, or either, brand to customers. I have yet to get a complaint on either brand.

MidWest large dog crates come in single, double and triple door styles. The double and triple doors make it so easy to get inside the kennel, both for the dog and for the owner cleaning them. The third door option makes it easy to slip a bowl of water inside the kennel without the dog escaping.

The MidWest Life Stages crates have a free divider panel to make the crate "grow" with the puppy. This is a fantastic feature and saves large breed dog owners hundreds of dollars by offering one size from puppy to adulthood. There are also two easy to use water bottle attachments on the sides so you don't have to worry about your pet not having access to water. The MidWest Life Stages large dog crates will hold a dog up to nearly 50lbs comfortably and offer both single door access and double door access.

MidWest Giant Dog CratesThe MidWest Giant Dog Crates are the best friend to the large breed dog owner. With sizes that offer security for dogs up to Great Danes and Mastiffs. Available in both single and double door styles, the giant dog crates are made of heavy metal and also come with the floor panel for your pet's comfort. These are the largest and strongest giant dog crates I've come across in the animal business. The corners are also rounded on all of these cage style dog crates for ultimate safety for both you and your pet.

How to Crate Train a Dog

How to Introduce a Puppy to a Crate

A crate (also called a kennel) is the best way to ensure your pet is safe when you are asleep or away from home. Dogs are den animals and most acclimate quickly to a small sleeping area. A proper introduction is all it takes to provide a safe haven for a pet.

Purchase a Secure Dog Kennel

Purchase a dog kennel large enough to secure the dog for several hours comfortably. If a kennel is too large for a young puppy the pet will not feel secure. Make sure the kennel is large enough for the puppy to turn around comfortably and stand up completely. Larger dog kennels should have a dividing wall to block off the extra space... Accessories for Big Dog Crates

Keep Your Puppy Comfortable in the Kennel

Once you have your puppy crate trained and house broken there are a few accessories you can add to make it more comfortable inside. A bit of padding or a thin bed makes longer stays in the kennel softer on the joints of large breed dogs. Crate covers block the wind or sun from a crate if you have it outside. A crate fan is essential if you place the dog crate in a small or confined warm area of the home.

Dog Gone Smart Brown Colored Pet Crate Pad

Dog crate pads and beds
One thing to keep in mind when choosing a crate pad for your large breed dog is that the thicker the pad, the less height room you have inside the kennel. Don't buy a crate liner or bed that is too thick for your crate. Since the cage door is nearly flush with the floor on big crates it also poses a safety issue for the dog trying to enter and exit the crate.

These can't replace a hard pet crate in severe weather, but they are better than nothing to protect against minor weather. They also help to keep the outside of your pet's kennel clean when out in the rugged wilderness camping with the family.

Cage/Crate Cooling FanDog crate fans
It's very important to keep your dog cool inside a kennel or crate. Even though the dog is not active while inside, if you notice him panting a lot while he's in there you probably need a crate fan. The dog may just be nervous, buy a fan may also help calm his nerves. The slight humming sound can help to soothe the dog inside the kennel. A crate fan hangs on the outside and precautions should be taken to make sure the dog can in no way get to the power cord. A fan may scare a young dog if it was not trained with a fan on the crate. Just spend a little time retraining the dog with the fan on to show them it's safe.

Crate Water Bottles
Don't forget the water! Your dog need access to water, especially if he's going to be in a crate for a few hours. Water bowls are a mess since they usually spill when we put them in or the dog accidentally spills it while in the crate. With a puppy a water bowl is just a messy toy inside the crate. Not to mention a bored puppy may chew up a plastic water bowl if it's left in the cage. To be on the safe side invest in a large plastic water bottle that is hung outside the cage with just a licker stick inside for the dog to get access to fresh water any time he wants a drink.

Do you have any ideas where to find a dog crates with just a wire bottom? My mom is looking for that specific type and can only find the ones with a plastic bottom.
  • C_Cameron Jul 3, 2011 @ 5:15 pm | delete
Hmm, I'm not sure which style you are looking for Ziggyzane, all the dog crates I listed that are metal/cage style have metal bottoms (under the plastic tray). You can easily remove the tray on any of them to have just a wire bottom.
  • AJTyne Jul 17, 2011 @ 12:34 am | delete
If you look at Midwest crates on their website, or Amazon, they have some that do not come with any pan, so you can put your own in. It's not good to put the dog in a crate with only the wire bottom -- that is uncomfortable, even under a blanket, and it is easy for the dog's nails or paw to get caught under a wire. But a bed that fills the whole crate is fine.
