When selecting large floor pillows that may receive regular use, consider how the pillows will be used. I'll admit that at my age, I have many reasons to get down on the floor. Don't take that the wrong way - I have kids! Board games, video games, even doing puzzles together often requires that we sit or lounge on the floor to play at a level in which a small child can reach the pieces.

My eight year old seems to be able to lay on his stomach on the floor for hours or sit cross-legged without his legs going numb. Not me. After five minutes, my back hurts, my arms are sore from holding myself up and I end up spending a lot of uncomfortable time searching for a comfortable position.

Large floor pillows solve that issue. I can sit on them comfortably and not bruise a tail bone or lay across them so my stiff, old bones (okay, I'm not really THAT old) aren't pressed to the hard floor. Carpet alone just doesn't seem to cut it.

We have a family room with a corner sectional. Tucked back behind the sectional where the corner piece is away from the wall, we've stored a pile of large floor cushions that can be pulled out for family game night or the kids' sleepovers. Best investment we ever made.

A selection of different sized floor pillows might come in handy. Some large pillow chairs mixed with some smaller cushions means you have a variety of seating options for different occasions. Floor pillows you might want for decoration are different from the ones the kids would want to use while playing video games which might be different from the ones adults might use for an evening playing board games. Think about the circumstances under which you'll need these pillows and then get the right kind for each situation. If you buy them all at once, you can shop around a particular color theme and get matching colors and patterns even if the manufacturers are different.

One tip: If you have one of those sectional sofas that are somewhat rounded in the center, you might find you have a great spot behind that section in which you can store your large floor pillows when they're not in use.
