Largemouth Bass Fishing Tactics | How to Catch Big Bass

When I say monster largemouth bass I am talking about bass that run in the range of 4 - 7 pounds and that's a damn fine bass for a kid. Of course I caught smaller bass as well but here's the true scoop ...

Grandpa taught me that bass eat damn near anything. BIG Bass eat mice, frogs, snakes, and other fish. Sure they eat bugs and worms too but BIG bass like a BIG mouthful when they are hungry and pretty much anything, even young or small birds are fair game when it comes to a big bass and its appetite.

It doesn't take fancy, expensive rods or reels to hook big bass. It doesn't take expensive boats, or the latest, greatest fishing lures or fish finders. In fact, I cauhgt most of my biggest bass as a young boy using a zebco fishing rod and reel. In the 1960's a Zebco rod and reel were about $10 and bait was free. I just caught it.

I'd dig some worms and catch some small perch. Then I'd rig up the LIVE perch to a couple hooks and cast that live perch into some good "bassey lookin water." I'd let that perch do its lil dance, using a very slow retrieve and BAM! Some hungry bass would smack that perch like he hadn't eaten in months. And ...

I can tell you this, from experience, there isn't anything more exciting for a 8 - 12 year old kid than hooking a nice BIG bass. They fight like the devil himself and what a feast they provide. After we'd get back to the cabin, I'd clean the fish and Grandpa would cook'em up and there is nothing better than fresh cooked bass with fried potatoes, tomatoes, onions and biscuits.

Largemouth bass names include black bass, 'ole bucketmouth, green bass and linesides. Usually, these big game predators are a dark green to almost black, and have dark "stripes" running along the side flanks. The mouth is the distinguishing characteristic of this bass. It is overly LARGE, thus the name "largemouth" bass.

Where to find largemouth bass

Largemouth bass can be found in fresh water with adequate cover foliage. Lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams have been known to produce these fighting monster game fish. They are native all across the USA and into Canada. They are found in other countries as well with the new possible world record coming from a lake in Japan.

Largemouth will hang out in areas of heavy cover like underwater grass, structures, and especially lily pad fields. This helps them in their hunting and feeding habits. It also helps YOU know where to look for them!

One of the best times to catch big largemouth bass is the week prior to the spawning season. You can tell when that will be by watching the moon. One week prior to the first full moon of Spring is a dandy time to be going bass fishing. During the new moon bass are inactive at night but very active the next day. During a full moon largemouth bass are very active at night but the next day will be slow moving like molasses going UP a rough tree.

During the hot days of summer you need to fish at night if you want to catch big bass because during the day every Tom, Dick, Harry and Sally with a boat or Jet ski is turning the water into a pool of noise and waves. This fact along with the higher water temp makes it difficult to catch big largemouth bass. When the sun goes down, the noise stops and water begins to cool it's then time to rig up your rod and try your luck at catching some bass. So during summer, fish at night and give spinner baits a try. Use a slow retrieve and see what happens.

Largemouth bass fishing is sorta like deer hunting. If a whitetail hunter wants a huge buck he knows the best time to catch that buck off his game (not paying attention to danger) is during the rut. During the rut a whitetail or any member of the deer family is sex crazed and only cares about one thing. Does. Well ...

Largemouth bass fishing is similar in that Spring and Fall, Morning and Evening are generally the best times to hook big bass and be sure to watch the moon because it'll tell you when you have the best chance of catching that big boy.
