Old Fashioned German Shepherds sometimes known as Old Style German Shepherds are what some would consider our dogs because they lack the extreme angulation of American and German showlines. Many people would liken our Old Fashioned German Shepards closer to the appearance of Rin Tin Tin versus a show dog of today. While our Old Style German Shepards are, on average, larger than the dogs of yesteryear, they still embody the same traits that these dogs of the past represent: amazing, loyal family companions. Please note, that just because large German Shepherd breeders also list their dogs as old fashioned German Shepherds or old style German Shepherds, this is not to imply that the shepherds from back in the 50s were also as large as they are today. While there were a very few large German Shepherd breeders back in this time frame, the old fashioned German Shepherd denotes the "straight back" style.

Q: Are your dogs Shiloh Shepherds / Shiloh Shepherd Dogs? Are you a Shiloh Shepherd breeder?

A: No! Shiloh Shepherds are a non-AKC registered breed "in development" created from a specific blend of larger German Shepherd Dogs (most originating from Shiloh Kennels) crossed with a mix known as MAW by Tina Barber. While Tina Barber may have originated the Shiloh Shepherd breed, she produced many pure AKC registered German Shepherds as well. We breed AKC registered German Shepherd Dogs. Most do have "Shiloh lines" in that parts of their pedigrees can trace back to the German Shepherd Dogs from Shiloh kennel and the AKC foundations of the Shiloh Shepherd breed who did NOT have the MAW factor. However, our dogs are not Shiloh Shepherds! More information can be seen on our FAQ regarding our dogs.

Q: Are your dogs King Shepherds / King German Shepherds / King Size German Shepherds? Are you a King Shepherd breeder?

A: King Shepherds as a breed are a "breed in development" not accepted by the American Kennel Club but can be registered elsewhere and are a cross of larger German Shepherd Dogs, Shiloh Shepherds, and possible various flock guardians. Our breeding dogs are registered with the American Kennel Club and are German Shepherd Dogs. There are people that loosely use the term "King Shepherd" to apply to any oversized German Shepherd, and also use the terms "King German Shepherd", "King Size Shepherd" or "King Size German Shepherd", which is fine. However, we do want to clarify that while some of our dogs may share relatives in the pedigrees, ours are not the same as the registered King Shepherd breed of dog. More information can be seen on our FAQ regarding our dogs. Pioneer Shepherds are are similar to King Shepherds but are 100% German Shepherd Dogs. We are large German Shepherd breeders.

Q: Do you ever have solid black German Shepherd puppies / solid black German Shepherds / black German Shepards?

Yes! While we do not have any solid black dogs, we do occasionally have puppies produced that are known as solid black German Shepherds. Sometimes a puppy may come out with a tiny spot of white, perhaps on the toes or chest, but we have produced puppies that are completely solid black German Shepherds as well. The puppies produced may be either short or plush coat solid black German Shepherd puppies. Our male, Ash, when bred to the correct female, has a great chance of producing solid black German Shepherd puppies. As large German Shepherd breeders, our black German Shepherds may be larger than typical.

Maskless German Shepherds, which can sometimes be known as reverse mask German Shepherds, are a unique color variation. When both parents carry the maskless gene, or are maskless themselves, the puppies will not have the black muzzle commonly associated with German Shepherd Dogs. While atypical, it does occasionally happen and while it may not be desirable to some breeders, we find it particularly beautiful. An example of a maskless German Shepherd would be Rin Tin Tin II or Rin Tin Tin IV.

Reverse mask German Shepherds, in addition to their lack of mask, will also have extra markings on their face under their cheeks and the bridge of their nose that make them appear particularly wolf-like. When coupled with sable (especially silver sable) coloration, you have pure German Shepherd Dogs that appear much like a wolf or wolf hybrid but have absolutely NO WOLF in them. An example of this would be London from The Littlest Hobo.

Again, while this is not a commonly seen color, it is absolutely something produced within the German Shepherd breed. We are hoping to produce this unique variation in both short and long coats in the future. Posted below is a video of Luke, who is a maskless German Shepherd that greatly resembles Rin Tin Tin IV, except his coloring is tan rather than silver.

Reverse Masked German Shepherd Puppies

Q: Do you have old fashioned German Shepherds / old style German Shepherds / old world German Shepherds?

Our dogs can be considered what is known as "old fashioned German Shepherds", "old style German Shepherds" or "old world German Shepherds" as our dogs have less angulation than typical American showline German Shepherds and do not have the roached back of many German showline German Shepherds. Our dogs have a straight-backed, sturdy appearance to a gentle slope, a more traditional look. Q: Do you ever produce white German Shepherd puppies, also known as White Shepherds?

A: Yes, as long coat German Shepherd breeders, please contact us regarding availability of beautiful white German Shepherd puppies! We may occasionally have both pure white as well as a white variation which is similar to the color of champagne and is sometimes described as apricot coloration or "honey kissed coloration" in both the long and short coat length. Our white German Shepherd puppies will only appear out of certain parents, so please inquire as to the availability of our white German Shepherd puppies. While we are long coat German Shepherd breeders, we will occasionally have large white German Shepherds that are of the traditional coat length.

White German Shepherds can vary in appearance from that of a snow white with coal black nose pigmentation to that of a creamy golden or even reddish hue. As white German Shepherd breeders we will produce variations within this spectrum, as we not only have a few white German Shepherds, but certain dogs that are not white do carry this gene and will produce it when bred to another that carries or is white. We produce both white long haired German Shepherds as well as traditional short coat white German Shepherds.

What are Pioneer Shepherds?

Pioneer Shepherds are a specific type of German Shepherd Dog bred by Pioneer German Shepherds, so it is simply a variation of our kennel name. Many owners of our puppies have started referring to their dogs as Pioneer Shepherds as our dogs are not typical German Shepherd Dogs! We are still large German Shepherd breeders, however, and Pioneer Shepherds are not a breed in and of itself. How do our dogs differ from the typical German Shepherd?

# SIZE: Our dogs are usually larger to a LOT larger than the average German Shepherd Dog. Male German Shepherds can typically run 24-26" at the shoulder per AKC standards, 23.5-25.5" per the German SV standard, with weights in the 75-90 pound range. Males we produce typically run 28-32+" at the shoulder, with most weights averaging 120-140+ pounds. An AKC standard female would be in the 22-24" range, 21.5-23.5" for the German SV, with standard weight being 60-80 pounds. Our females usually average 26-28"+ with a weight of about 85-110+ pounds.

# TEMPERAMENT: Most German Shepherds are higher energy dogs. Some lines are bred specifically for a purpose, such as working lines being utilized by the police force. These dogs can be drastically different from ours. Rather than breeding for the conformation ring or working ability, we focus on breeding family companions. Our dogs are, in general, going to be more calm and laidback than a typical German Shepherd Dog. Our breeding dogs are in the low to medium range for drive and energy, rather than medium to high, as most families want a playful dog that knows when to settle down and relax as well. Our dogs are natural guardians and protectors who are intelligent enough to determine friend from foe without being overly aggressive.

# COAT TYPE: Most people are used to seeing a typical German Shepherd Dog with a short coat. While we occasionally produce short coat puppies, the majority of the dogs at our kennel are known as long coats. Because of their "bear-like" appearance, people may sometimes confuse a long haired German Shepherd with that of a mix. It is merely a recessive gene and when two long coated dogs are bred together, only long coats will result.

# STRUCTURE: Depending on the lines, our dogs can look vastly different than a typical German Shepherd Dog. The dogs usually seen in the AKC shows are known as American Showlines. These dogs tend to have slender heads, large ears, and an elongated appearance due to an extremely sloped back. German Showlines, while usually having a nice front end, tend to have an appearance known as "roach back" or "banana back" due to an extreme arch of the rear. Our dogs have more of an old fashioned appearance similar to dogs seen in the 1950's, such as Rin Tin Tin, when dogs had little angulation and a very sturdy appearance. We strive to breed for a more "blocky" head with smaller ears, a wider muzzle, and little angulation in the hindquarters. Our dogs tend to have a thicker bone structure overall than most German Shepherd Dogs.
