Various Strategies for Catching Largemouth Bass

So you want to catch largemouth bass. It can be done and done effectively if you follow the strategies that I will lay out for you in this article you will catch more largemouth bass. We are of course assuming two things. First that there are bass in the waters you are fishing and that you have a fishing rod and reel.

Strategy one to catch largemouth bass

Strategy one for catching largemouth bass is to locate them. Look around submerged logs or trees they like to hide in the shadows. Under man made docks and boathouses and along side the boats docked there. The largemouth bass can be found at the edge of weed beds and up under the weeds. At the breakpoints of drop offs and in the shallow waters especially in the quiet early morning and again in the late evening when things die down of the lake you are fishing.

Strategy two for catching largemouth bass

Strategy two for catching largemouth bass is to use the bait that is common to the body of water you are fishing in. A crankbait that is the right size and color of the baitfish or crawfish the largemouth bass is used to eating is good to use. If the water is murky or muddy use a rattle crankbait to make a little noise which will draw attention to the lure. In clear water shiny chrome color bait seems to work the best. Fish at different depths until you find out where the largemouth bass is congregating remembering that they are schooling fish and where you catch one there are probably two or three more nearby.

Strategy three for catching largemouth bass

Strategy three for catching largemouth bass is to use plastic worms fished slowly along the bottom and in the weeds. I prefer black with a purple tail but they come in all shapes and colors. Hook them through the head then twist your hook around and embed the point and barb into the worm body to make them virtually weed-less. This is called a Texas rig and you can hook on different size slip sinkers to allow them to float up off the bottom a little bit. A whole lot of largemouth bass have been caught with this set-up. It is hard to go wrong when you fish for largemouth bass in this manner.

Strategy four for catching largemouth bass

Strategy four is to use the right fishing rod and reel set-up. It is best to use a moderate length rod fairly stiff so that you can set the hook gently but firmly so as not to rip the bass' mouth. I usually use between 8 and 10 lb test line but it may depend on how weedy the area is. Largemouth bass like to head for the thickest weeds they can find and you may have to coax them out with some force. I usually use a spinning reel but the bait caster has re-entered the field and a lot of the pros are using them. The take a lot more practice to prevent back lashes from occurring.
