The Best Mexican Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta- Las Palomas

My husband and I have spent many a winter down in sunny Puerto Vallarta so we've checked out the local restaurant scene over the years. One of the highlights for visitors to Puerto Vallarta is wallking the famed Malecon (oceanside boardwalk) and exploring the old town and church. It is in this famous area that you'll find the best Mexican restaurant in Puerto Vallarta.

I don't use the word "Best" lightly and it is a unique combinations of factors that make this restaurant and bar a step above all others. These include the location and view, the delicious food, the affordable prices, the authentic atmosphere, and wonderfully friendly staff. Join me as we take a virtual tour of one of my favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

The Location - Downtown Puerto Vallarta

Las Palomas was established back in 1979 and was built in a prime corner location directly across from the world famous Malecon. The location makes it a great choice when you are taking in all of Puerto Vallarta's most popular sites such as the arches and the church. Walking the malecon works up an appetite so I love that you can simply cross the street and grab a great bite to eat while still enjoying a spectacular view. In the photo above, you can see the restaurant exterior as seen from the Malecon itself.

The View of the Beach & Banderas Bay

What a View!

The prime location on the Malecon affords the patrons of Las Palomas some of the best dining views in town. Most of the dining tables are set-up in the main level with huge open windows that let the cool ocean breeze blow through. However, there are several tables upstairs where the restaurant bar is located as well. The photo above shows both the view from the upstairs bar and from the restaurant tables. After a long day touring the town of Puerto Vallarta, there is nothing better than sitting in the bar sipping one of their fabulous Margaritas or a mixed cocktail while watching the sunset across Banderas Bay. Simply gorgeous!

Affordable Authentic Mexican Food

Las Palomas is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Las Palomas is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I know you might be thinking - really - breakfast at a Mexican restaurant? And my answer is a resounding absolutely! They have one of the most affordable breakfasts in town so if you are up for trying some local cuisine, this is the place to do it. You can sip cinnamon infused Mexican coffee and hot chocolate or cocoa and taste some local specialties such as huevos rancheros (fried eggs over a tortilla with ham, beans and cheese), scrambled eggs with Mexican sausage, or a Jean Ingham omelet (green peppers, onions and cheese). You can get a huge breakfast for around $5.

As you'll see when you open the lunch or dinner menu at Las Palomas, they offer a wide array of food choices for just about every pallette. That said, I highly recommend choosing a dish from their authentic mexican and seafood portions of the menu. Both the Veracruz style fish and any of the enchiladas are out of this world. My favorite are the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce. Lunch and dinner menu items range in price from $8 - $22.

The above photo shows one of our dining experiences. As you can see, there is no shortage of food. The fresh salsa and homemade tortilla chips are so good that we are usually full by the time the delectable gourmet food arrives. The bottom line is make sure that you are hungry!

"Authentic in atmosphere and menu, it's one of Puerto Vallarta's few genuine Mexican restaurants."

Frommer's Puerto Vallarta Guide Review

One of Puerto Vallarta's first restaurants, this is the power-breakfast place of choice -- and a popular hangout for everyone else throughout the day. Authentic in atmosphere and menu, it's one of Puerto Vallarta's few genuine Mexican restaurants. Breakfast is the best value. The staff pours mugs of steaming coffee spiced with cinnamon as soon as you're seated. Try classic huevos rancheros or chilaquiles (tortilla strips, fried and topped with red or green spicy sauce, cream, cheese, and fried eggs). Lunch and dinner offer traditional Mexican specialties, plus a selection of stuffed crepes. The best places for checking out the malecón and watching the sunset while sipping an icy margarita are the spacious bar and the upstairs terrace.

Las Palomas Interior Design & Artwork

Another thing that we love about Las Palomas is that they support the local artists and proudly display many original artworks in the restaurant. Brightly painted walls along with mosaic tilework, hand-painted murals, and other decorative artwork make this hacienda-style restaurant feel like you've truly stepped into an authentic Mexican home.

The Mariachi Band & Friendly Staff

In the evenings, a live mariachi band plays and will serenade tables with some local music favorites. Go enough times and you'll be singing along like some of the folks in this photo. If you are serenaded by a band at ANY restaurant, do me a favor and don't forget to tip them.

As I've seen many reviewers of the Las Palomas restaurant say - 'The staff treats you like family'. What more can I say .... everyone is so friendly and helpful at this fantastic restaurant.
