Las Vegas the Accidental Tourist: A Curmudgeon in Sin City
Ranked #15,433 in Travel & Places, #365,787 overall
Lots of People Have to Go to Vas Vegas, People Who Don't Want to.....
Well, love to travel, but had no desire to go to Las Vegas. In fact, was hoping that I could go my whole life without going there. I was just a little prideful about it.
But then came the conference that I really wanted/needed to attend and sure enough, it was there. I held my nose and called the airline.
I keep hearing that its a great place. I was worried that my negativity would stand out with my conference attendees. But, well, none of them wanted to be in that city either, and several disliked it as much as I do. So at least I wasn't alone and didn't have to hold my tongue.
Lorne and Angel Do the Strip
Turns out the Lorne, whose promotional picture was the size of a building was being held hostage at the Tropicana, interestingly the same hotel of my residence. If he didn't do the boss's bidding a show girl would be killed each day.
Lorne, who was also an intuitive could see your future when he heard you sing. His job was to identify people with sparkling futures. The one of the night was a young woman on her way to chef's school in Paris. Her destiny was to open several 4 star restaurants and be world famous. After being identified the victim would be given free chips to play the slots. This would become so mesmerizing that the victim would never leave the chair and her brilliant destiny would be sold to the highest bidder.
I loved that episode because it hit all the points of what I think Las Vegas (and Atlantic City etc) really is. That's why I didn't ever want to go there. But there I was, buying a ticket to go.
Penn Jillette Speaks With Forked Tongue
Do You Agree With Me?
Penn Jillete is the talkative half of the magic act, Penn and Teller. In fact, he is famous, no notorious for speaking out loud and often. HIs face and Teller's great you from a 20 foot high sign inviting you to go to their show. They are one of those perennial shows that are the staple of the strip.Teller never liked the kind of magician who gave the impression that the magic was 'real'. Early in his career he admired the great Randi, another magician whose act included showing the audience what the trick was, a no-no in the field.
Like his hero Randi, Penn loves to reveal the illusion to audience so that they won't be 'fooled'. I guess he thinks that the audiences aren't smart enough to know that there is a 'trick'. Like Randi, he also likes to expose other things he thinks are fraudulent, things that are designed to take peoples' money through illusion.
Several of the things that he likes to 'debunk' are things that I know are helpful to people, because I have seen it. They don't meet his criteria so he 'exposes' them, saying they are like the tricks he does so well. EFT, Acupuncture and coaching are three of those things.
However, Pann Jillette is a big man in Vegas. His face, with his partner's is one of the first things you see when existing the airport, in a 20 foot high sign that tells you what a wonderful place Vegas is. My thought is that it is a phony place designed to make people think its fun to lose money while looking bored. Wonder when he is going to debunk Vegas.
Am I Correct About Penn Jillette?
I think at best there is a contradiction in someone who 'exposes' so many hoaxes to keep people from being fooled and wasting money, who has spent his career in a city that is totally false and survives by using illusion to take money from people?
BTW. if you think I designed the poll in a skewed manner, you are correct!
The Dancing Lights At the Bellagio!
If You Are There, This Is a Must See!
But do know that when you are closer, you will get wet. It was starting to get cool and the water didn't help. But it was well worth it.
Its fire works done with water. The music used that night was of the kind that one hears at fireworks. It was a flawless show. Seeing tsunami like mist come at you and know you weren't going to get out of the way was quite an experience! Go see it.
All That Glitters Is Not Gold
Or, Why Not Take the Gambling Money and Go to Paris, the Real One!
Ok, so I am at the Tropicana, going down in the elevator from the 14th floor, looking at the view. On the left is a bunch of turrets that look like the castle at Fantasyland in Disneyland. You won't see me going there. To the right was a mammoth thing, what you see above, that looked kind of like a luxury liner. Not my cup of tea either, but at least not so kitchy. Then in the middle, right in front of me is something that looks like the Chrysler building. I had seen and been disgusted by the faux Statue of Liberty but had missed what was behind it. Someone pointed out that the whole thing is the New York skyline (smooched together). Ugh. Why not just go to New York?!?
I reminds me of a story my brother told about a woman he dated when he was stationed in San Diego. She was into going to Disneyland every weekend. "But it has a place the is just like the French Quarter", she would say, to which he replied, "I have been to THE French Quarter."
What is it about Americans that they like these imitations? EuroDisney failed, but we have not just one but TWO Disneylands.
The Disneyland Syndrome
What Is That All About?

Why Not Just Go to New York?
The Airport to the Hotel, Down the Strip and Back
General Impressions and Observations
1. The airport. Its dumpy and dreary. I had come from RDU and then Dallas, both attractive and vital airports, one small and the other huge. There are slot machines, huge banks of them, all over the place. I didn't see anyone using them and wondered if the overkill was keeping waiting passengers away. I will say that it is the only airport I have been in that has free WiFi. THAT was nice2. I arrived at midnight, supposedly the time when things are just hopping, but noticed that the people around me both the tourists and the workers seemed less than enthusiastic and not particularly enjoying themselves. I left at midnight on Saturday and it was pretty much the same thing.
3. There is a lot going on on the strip and I must admit that walking it was interesting, but it was not as bright or shiny as I thought it would be. In fact, much of it looked like Times Square before Rudy Guiliani, but with cleaner sidewalks. I didn't see a lot of streetwalkers though, and you can't miss them in Vegas.
4. The hotel I was in was underwhelming. Nice enough place to stay, but I will say that the other guests did not seem to be having a great time. I keep hearing about what party place it is, but I didn't see it.
Proposition: Las Vegas Is Phony, Negative and I Wouldn't Want to Be There
I Love Vegas! Its Got Everything and You Can't Not Have A Great Time There.
Please, when answering, tell us if you have actually been there or not
What Do You Think of Vegas?

Vegas Is Horrible!
linhah says:
Depressing atmosphere.
_Joan_ says:
Vegas is creepy and depressing. I would love to shake the people who are spending hours in the gambling dens and ask them, "You do realize, don't you, that you're the one that's paying for all these fancy buildings? Realize also that the one person out of a zillion who wins a big jackpot is winning YOUR money. He really ought to write you a thank you note, because that's your cash he's taking home."
Vegas Is Wonderful!
akumar46 says:
I have not gone to Vegas but heard a lot about it.
EditorDave says:
Been there (maybe 10-15 times). It's another city. I have friends (from high school, college, and work) who live (or have retired) there. I like exploring the strange and gaudy architecture (I'm a photography nut) and the desert is also particularly interesting (compared to the deserts of California, Arizona, and New Mexico). I like the Luxor and the Venetian -- both like walking around in Egypt or Venice. The city is unique in its own way. So, yeah, I'd go back (but I don't drink, I don't gamble, and I'm not wild about "shows")... so I'd only go back to take pictures and explore.
kiwisoutback says:
Well, Vegas if phony, but in a good way. That's the appeal of it. Like Rajays, it's best enjoyed in small doses I think. I thought maybe I wouldn't want to go to Vegas, but being there changed my mind about it. It's a great place, and a lot more to it than just casinos and shows.
Rajays says:
I actually enjoy Vegas for short vacations. Lots of shows, activities and some casino games - good for 3-4 days at a time.

- Great lens. A lot of people absolutely love Las Vegas: The best place on Earth. You can walk from Paris to Egypt to Italy in just a few minutes without even having to stop gambling, eating or drinking. i however prefer the real thing and I don't gamble (except on the stock markets of course) My first visit was for just one night after driving through Death Valley on the way to the Grand Canyon. It was quite amusing, but I was glad to leave the following morning.

- I've had some good cheap food in Las Vegas, but I hear that the food isn't as cheap now as it used to be (just hearsay, since I've only been there a few times).
But one of the best things that has ever happened to me happened in Vegas! My husband and I went there for a charity dinner he had to attend, a free hotel room was included with the trip, and that's where I conceived my youngest child! So I was a big winner there even though I really don't like the place.
