Why Laser Sights?

Laser sights for handguns have many advantages for training and shooting.  Using a laser sight for training allows you to see where you are aiming and where your shot hit on target.  Using a laser sight for shooting allows you to "point and shoot".  In addition, there is the intimidation factor of a laser pointing at the home intruder's chest.
Using laser sights during shooting training is extremely helpful to see what mistakes are being made.  The laser dot allows you and your instructor to view where you are aiming and where your shot hits.  If you aimed high or low you might be anticipating the shot by raising or lowering the gun.  If you are pulling the shot to the left or right you may need to adjust your grip or trigger pull.  Using a laser sight during training will help you become a more proficient shooter, you perform like you train.

The major advantage to a laser sight is the ability to "point and shoot".  With a laser sight you don't have to close one eye, line up the front and rear sight, make sure there is an equal gap between the sights, and check the height of the front and rear sights.  You simply put the dot where you want it and shoot.  Having to taken away the need to bring your firearm up to your line of sight you now can shoot from the hip or close to your chest.  In a quick draw situation or close quarters this could be helpful.  In a situation where you have to shoot someone keeping the task as simple as possible is important and this is what a laser sight does for you.

Now that you've decided you need a laser sight for your gun.   You need to decide what kind works best for your needs is it a grip laser sight, internal or guide rod laser sight, a rail mount laser sight, and do you need a red or green laser sight.

Types of Laser Sights

Rail Mount Laser Sights
A rail mount laser sight attaches to the rail on the bottom of the frame on your handgun. Rail mount sights are usually the least expensive option for laser sights and easy to install. Rail mount laser sights are typically designed for semi-automatic handguns and rifles. If you have a revolver a grip laser sight might be a better option. There are a couple of things that you need to answer for yourself before you purchase a rail mount sight:

If you would also like to have a rail mount flashlight installed on your firearm a rail mount laser sight is not your solution. A grip laser sight or guide rod sight might be a better choice for you.

If you carry your gun in a holster, you will have to purchase a holster that accommodates your sight.

Due to the rail mount sight being on the outside of the gun it may be knocked out of alignment and get snagged in your pocket or rear waist band while attempting to draw.

You will have to reach up to the sight and turn it on, which is one more step to take in a stressful situation.

Internal Laser Sights
A guide rod sight or internal laser sights will replace your existing guide rod. Installing a guide rod sight is as easy as field stripping your gun. The guide rod laser sight is internal, it won't get knocked out of alignment. Another advantage due to the laser sight being internal, is you can also install a rail mount flashlight. Guide rod sights are priced on the higher end due to the dual function of the guide rod laser sight.
Additional advantages to a guide rod laser sights are:

The laser is as close as you can get to the bore, therefore the point of aim will be closer to point of impact.

Guide rod laser sights are typically designed with an ambidextrous switch that is easy to reach. Once the switch is turned on, there is no additional squeezing required.

Laser Grips
Laser Grips replace your existing group with a custom grip and laser sight in one. Arguably the greatest advantage to the laser grips sight is there is no on/off switch. By simply gripping the gun the laser sight is activated. The installation is as simple as removing some screws, pulling the old grip off and putting the grip laser sight on.
Although, the grip laser sight is external the small design and the fact that the grip is secured in multiple locations reduces the chance of the laser being knocked out of alignment.

Rear Laser Sights
Laserlyte has created a great laser sight that minimally changes your gun.  Simply take out your rear sights and insert the Laserlyte rear laser sights. You are able to use the laser sights or the iron sights.  The left side of the sight is a laser and the right side holds the batteries and allows for adjustments.

LaserMax

LaserMax has been designing and manufacturing laser diode modules for over 20 years. They produce laser sights that Military and Law Enforcement use in the performance of their duties. Laser modules manufactured by Laser Max have flown on several shuttle missions for the U.S. LaserMax creates and designs laser sights with the scientific precision needed for a shuttle mission and the ruggedness for Military operations. Laser Max produces many kinds of laser sights including red laser sights and green laser sights. In addition to different color laser sights they manufacture laser sights that mount on different locations of your pistol, handgun, or revolver. There are rail mount laser sights, internal or guide rod laser sights, frame mounted laser sights, and side plate mount laser sights.

LaserMax laser sights have pulsating beams. They create their laser sights this way, because scientific studies of the human visual system show pulsating objects are easier to see than constant objects. Although, it does increase the cost to produce laser sights with pulsating beams the advantage of picking up your target faster out weighs the cost.

The laser sights are designed with a distinctive on and off switch. The switch is created to be used by right and left handed shooters. You will not have to change your grip to turn the laser sight on and you won't be giving away your position unneccessarily.

Laser Max laser sights are designed with scientific precision, ruggedness, and well thought out features that create a great laser sight. Buy a LaserMax laser sight today.

Red Laser Sights Vs. Green Laser Sights

Viridian Green Laser SightsYou've decided that you need a laser sight for your gun. Then you chose a rail mount laser, a laser grip, or a guide rod laser. Now, you need to decide on a red laser sight or a green laser sight. The research I've seen shows the green laser sight is easier to see in daylight hours than the red laser sight.

Here is the science behind green laser sights being easier to see in daylight hours: Green is closer to the center of the visible spectrum at 532 Nanometers. It is easier for our eyes to see the color green vs. the color red at 635 Nanometers. A green laser can appear as much as 50 times brighter than a red laser. A visible spectrum chart illustrates 532 nm is the ideal wavelength to maximize visibility during day or night.

Once again, you need to choose which color of laser sight would work well for you. If your main purpose is to protect against a night time home invasion, then a red laser sight will work just fine. If you are going to do daylight target shooting and want a brighter light or if you will be in tactical situations during the day a green laser sight might be better for you.

Crimson Trace Laser Grips

Crimson Trace has been the leader in laser grip laser sights for over 15 years. They have served the United States Military, major law enforcement agencies, security minded home owners, target shooters, and individuals who want to improve their shooting. Crimson Trace laser sights can be used in a close combat situation, for home security or for training. Laser sights are great for training because they allow you and everyone around you to clearly see where you are aiming and if you are moving the handgun while you shoot. Crimson Trace prides themselves in being one of the top name brands in laser sights for handguns. They are the only company that produces the laser grip. If you are considering a laser sight, the laser grip might be the right choice for you. You do not have to buy a holster that will fit a rail mount laser sight. The laser sight is barely noticeable, and the instinctive activation allows you to turn the laser grip on by just squeezing the grip.

In July of 1994 Crimson Trace sold their first laser for Glock. They created a factory installed laser sight system for Glock. In January of 1996 Crimson Trace introduced the newly patented laser grip at the SHOT show. In June of 1996 Longboat Key Police Department in Florida became the first agency to issue laser grips to their officers. The list of how Crimson Trace has become one of top laser sight brands and continued to be a leader in laser sight technology is long and distinguished. Check out our Crimson Trace Laser Grips.
