Laser Thermometer or IR Thermometer - What is it for?

Laser Thermometers or InfraRed Thermometers measure the thermal energy output by an object. They are also known as Non-Contact Thermometers.

They are used to search for hot spots in electrical circuit breaker boxes and electrical circuit board manufacturing, calibrating and monitoring heating and cooling in manufacturing processes, and in fire fighting operations after a fire is extinguished in order to check for further hot spots. They can also be used for finding draughts and thermal leaks in buildings. In the home, laser thermometers can be used to check the temperature of an oven or other cooking device.

In short:
Culinary Laser Thermometers for cooking (to check the temperatures of ovens, hot plates and food.)

Non-Contact Thermometers for medical use (to check the temperature of body parts or location of survivors.)

Infrared Thermometers for automotive use (checking temperatures of engine, tires, exhaust etc.)

Thermal Leak Detector for finding drafts, malfunctioning devices in domestic and commercial buildings.

Thermal Heat Detector for ghosthunting: cold spots in haunted houses may indicate the presence of a ghost.

Why Use a Laser Thermometer?

What are the advantages?

It is too hot to touch

It is out of arm's reach

It is in a dangerous location

Touching would cause contamination

It is easily scratched or damaged

Touching it would cool it and invalidate the reading

Laser Thermometers for Cooking

What is a Culinary Laser Thermometer?

A Culinary Laser Thermometer uses infrared technology in order to measure surface temperature without touching the hot surface. The laser lets you aim; pulling the trigger gives a temperature reading on the display screen.

Why do you need it? Instantly tell if that pan is up to temperature, or if the barbecue is hot enough, to check if a suspect oven is faulty, or a refrigerator is too warm.

Laser Thermometers for Detecting Heat Loss

How would you use it?

Using a Laser InfraRed Thermometer to find drafts and cold spots around the home or other building can often uncover potential heat loss problems, and enable these to be fixed, often at minimal cost, but saving tens or even hundreds of dollars in fuel bills. Faulty repair jobs, old houses with unexpected voids and cosmetic cover jobs all come to light if you can detect a significant drop in temperature around the home.

Non-Contact Thermometer

Why use a non-contact thermometer?

Non-Contact Thermometers can be used for non-invasive temperature readings where it is difficult to check by standard thermometer, or it is time-consuming to sterilize a thermometer for multiple patient use - checking temperatures of animals, large numbers of patients, or patients with physical impairments. Accurate readings can be obtained quickly and easily without disturbing sleeping patients, such as the elderly or young children, and in a more dignified and pleasant manner.

Using a Laser Thermometer

How to get the best from an IR Thermometer

Laser thermometers are wonderful tools, but like most tools, you need to look after them to get the best from them! Here are a few tips to help you do just that.

Batteries. Don't assume those were fresh batteries you put in - get new ones, and make them high-quality. Do buy the ones the manufacturer recommends!

Calibration. Like most equipment, a laser thermometer needs to be set up correctly before use. Read the instruction manual and calibrate thermometer before you try to use it to take readings.

Distance calculations. As a good rule of thumb, apply a 12:1 ratio: for every inch in size that you need to measure, you need to be 12 inches away.

Moving relative to object. In order to take accurate readings, you must keep still. If your hand shakes, get another person to help!

Faulty Laser. Don't forget to keep the laser lens clean and free from dust and dirt, or the readings will be false.

Laser Thermometer Safety Tips

Always keep the laser thermometer covered when not in use to reduce the likelihood of moisture entering the device.

Release the trigger after use.

Do not point at the eyes - this could cause severe injury or blindness.

Avoid pointing the laser thermometer at reflective surfaces. The beam could bounce off and hit you in the eye.

Keep the device away from young children, and do not allow them to use it.

Avoid using the laser thermometer near inflammable gases or liquids.

Before you use a laser thermometer, confirm it is being used for the correct purpose according to the manufacturer's instruction leaflet.

As an added precaution against accidental misuse, wear thick safety goggles.
