Welcome to the Lathe Lens!
A lathe is a type of machine that produces cylindrical part. It makes parts like shafts and columns. You load it with "Stock" before you begin. A lathe spins the stock and a tool takes off material or machines it. When it is done you have a part that is built to certain specifications
There are a number of different types of lathes. There are wood lathes, metal lathes and CNC Lathes, which can be for wood or metal.
Lathes have been around since the Industrial Revolution. They were the original machines of production. The first ones were water powered.
